All About Eve Reviews

All About Eve is my idea of a perfect film,(and I am 17) beautiful and brooding at the same time. People consider this as one of the finest films ever made, and I cannot disagree. This and Shawshank Redemption are actually films that deserve to be in the top 250. The black and white cinematography is gorgeous, and the script is sharp and focused with great lines such as "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night". The direction is excellent, and this is further advantaged by a terrific cast, a very good subject matter and sumptuous costumes. I couldn't help being captivated by Bette Davis's performance as Margo Channing, her presence in the film is actually the film's main merit. Davis was an incredible actress, and while not exactly pretty compared to Maaureen O'Hara and Rita Hayworth and not very easy to work with at times, she always brought a sense of command to all her roles, especially in this film. I still think that All About Eve is her best film, I honestly do, and she is well supported by a terrific supporting cast with the likes of the idealistic Anne Baxter and the suave George Sanders. All in all, a beautiful film, that is a must-see, if you haven't seen it already. It is quite long, but it is well worth watching for Davis's performance. 10/10 Bethany Cox

Since this movie has always been considered as a timeless classic, I was really eager to check it out. Well, eventually, I wasn't disappointed and the damned thing completely deserved its stellar reputation. Still, there was one thing that did prevent this movie from being completely amazing though. Indeed, I thought it was rather far-fetched that a big star like Margo Channing would hire such a total stranger to be her assistant just like that. I mean, it's not as if the girl was starving or living under a bridge. Fortunately, this small issue wasn't a deal breaker, not at all, and the rest of the movie was pretty much flawless. Indeed, I just loved the introduction, how all the characters were in fact rather messed up and the whole thing gave a dark and fascinating look on the acting world. It shows how at least half of this world is in fact really superficial and hard work and talent won't be apparently enough, you would need to be also ruthlessly ambitious to succceed. Concerning Bette Davis,  I have to confess that I haven't seen so much of her work so far but she was definitely impressive in this movie. To conclude, it is a great classic, I really loved the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre. 

'All About Eve' is being considered a winner, I disagree with this, I wasn't very interested

'All About Eve' is a muddled movie which completely confused me, the cinematography, directing and acting are good but the plot could ruin the imagination of younger kids (the movie isn't for kids but received a U rating). The sound and quality is also rather poor.

Music is good and there is a small moment of movie history (like the ending of 'Cabaret') but I didn't really like the movie that much and if the poster had colour, why couldn't the movie have been the same? 'Gone With The Wind' was released 11 years earlier and they had the ability to tint it! 'All About Eve' is all black and white! Colour could've helped me understand what the hell was going on!

My 2nd favourite movie, just after 'Witness for the prosecution'. Great Bette Davis, great Sanders and great Baxter. But I think that Wilder would have done better yet :-P

Magnificent film!!! So glad I saw this! Bette Davis as "Margo Channing" was amazing!! Anne Baxter was incredible also! This movie is defifnitely a must-see!!

The quality of All About Eve has been much discussed and widely acclaimed in the decades following its release. All About Eve is a truly incredible movie that is hard to describe accurately in words.

The film still holds the record for the most amount of Academy Award nominations - as this screen gem received an unfathomable amount of 14. Just this merit in mind should be enough to warrant a screening. The themes of jealousy, manipulation, and betrayal richly unfold on screen with this exceptional film noir loosely adapted from a story by Mary Orr.

The story of this film is really quite simple; Margo Channing (Davis) is a star of the theatre who features in plays written by Lloyd Richards (Marlowe), and under the direction of her boyfriend and director Bill Sampson (Merrill). Margo has everything; fame, fortune and adoring fans. But one evening after Margo completes another performance her career is altered when one of her friends brings Eve Harrington (Baxter) into her life. Eve is one of Margo's fans who is obsessed; she watches every play that Margo features in and on every night it is being performed. Eve quickly wins the heart of Margo and her friends when she tells them the story of how she became a dedicated fan.

Soon Margo incorporates Eve into her daily life. Eve loyally assists in any way she can. But a theatre critic (Sanders) begins seeing through Eve's elaborate performance and scheme. It would be unthinkable to reveal more about the film's plot.

As the film opens we are introduced to all the characters via fascinating narration as an award ceremony unfolds. Then the film uses heavy flashbacks as we look at the aforementioned plot. Needless to say, the film is all about Eve.

One of the first things that struck me was the very intricately written screenplay by director Mankiewicz. The lines of dialogue are highly intriguing and are transformed to the screen skilfully using a fantastic cast. Bette Davis has never been better. She feels plausible and real as a famous star who is now struggling to hold onto her career. She was nominated for an Oscar with good reasoning. Anne Baxter was also nominated for an Oscar. Her portrayal is simply stunning to watch. The script was already good enough, but these two title actresses do wonders to that screenplay and nail their characters.

The supporting cast is full of big names. George Sanders was very articulate and skilled in bringing his character to life. Also as the narrator he needed a voice that was easy to listen to. The opening few moments of narration already had me engaged.

All About Eve is a true classic that suffers from few flaws. The film has always been widely acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. I can't blame them. You can only see it to believe how incredible the film really is.
