A good movie

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this movie since it was directed by Joseph Losey, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it turned out to be a rather tricky movie to judge. Indeed, on the surface, it basically focused on some rather pathetic and oversexed middle-aged college professors constantly praying and obsessing on their female students. On top of the that, none of the characters involved was really likeable or even really interesting. And, yet, I really enjoyed Josey cold but very classy directing and most of the scenes were beautifully set up and composed. As a result, I was instantly drawn into these academic world whose activities, at least, mentally, had very little to do with actual academics. I still think it’s too bad they didn’t give Jacqueline Sassard much to do though. Sure, I’ll have to admit that she was extremely charismatic and she definitely had an electric screen presence. However, to be honest, I wonder if she could act at all because that’s pretty much all she did, showing up and standing up during her scenes while all the male characters were drooling over her. Maybe it was by design, to show that they never actually cared about what she was actually thinking or saying, that it was all about possessing her physically. It was also interesting that even though pretty much every single scene was filled with sexual tension, most of it was much more mental than physical. In fact, I wonder if Stephen and Anna actually had sex after the car accident. I think they did which would be obviously pretty messed up but I really like the fact that, as it was displayed in this movie, we will actually never know for sure. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didn’t completely work for me, it was still a really intriguing movie and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in Joseph Losey’s work.
