A Very Murray Christmas review

Posted : 7 years, 10 months ago on 26 June 2016 07:10

I figured I would watch this since it's short and I like a majority of the actors. Also Netflix has yet to disappoint me except for with their kids shows. I haven't seen too many films by Sofia Coppola, but what I have seen was enjoyable. At least she isn't acting in this. Mitch Glazer also wrote Scrooged which was decent. This is Bill Murray's second writing credit in over 30 years. I'm really not feeling anything much yet. Okay this Chris Rock stuff is pretty funny. Baby it's cold outside! No idea who that band was but okay. Yuck I absolutely hate Maya Rudolph hope she isn't in too much. If that's really her singing voice that may be her only redeeming factor. Well at least that's all she came in for. These two Miley Cyrus songs are actually another plus for me. I wonder how many times George Clooney had to keep redoing that part lol. I wouldn't complain about all of them. Oh yes another Miley Cyrus song. The ending was just okay. I could have done without that extra scene of Maya Rudolph in the credits. Overall it's just okay. There are a few good songs here and there. It's probably one of the least impressive things Netflix has owned.

An average movie

Since this movie was the last one directed by Sofia Coppola I still needed to see, I was quite eager to check it out. Eventually, I was amazed about how underwhelming it was. Indeed, it is apparently some American tradition to have some kind of Christmas specials and Netflix thought they should release their own edgy version starring Bill Murray. On top of that, Murray was working again with Sofia Coppola more than a decade after ‘Lost in Translation’ so it all sounded pretty neat on paper. Unfortunately, the whole thing didn’t work at all in my opinion. Indeed, the humor was lame, the songs were pretty weak (I mean, if Miley Cyrus manages to deliver the best song, you should know you are in trouble) and, above all, it was just really boring. Basically, the whole approach of having Bill Murray not wanting to do the Christmas special seriously backfired and, even after he finally goes on with the show, it became some kind of cringe-inducing parody of the genre. Basically, they tried to make some kind of anti-Christmas special but, even though the concept had some potential, it was not funny and not entertaining whatsoever.  To conclude, I thought it was really weak and I don’t think it is really worth a look.
