A good movie

Posted : 7 years, 3 months ago on 13 January 2017 09:16

Not to be confused with ‘A Most Wanted Man’ which was released the very same year, this movie was the 3rd directing effort delivered by J.C. Chandor and since I really liked ‘All Is Lost’ and even loved ‘Margin Call’, I was really eager to check it out. Well, eventually, even though I did like the damned thing, I’m afraid it was still his least convincing movie so far. Even so, it was actually not bad at all though, the directing was solid with a nice realistic and gritty approach and the actors involved delivered some decent performances, especially Oscar Isaacs and Jessica Chastain. Unfortunately, I can’t say that the story was really mind-blowing though. That’s the tricky thing with such a title as you might expect a lot of action or some kind of badass gangster feature but I’m afraid it was rather misleading since there was not so much violence after all. It didn’t really help that they were involved in some rather dull business. Furthermore, the main character was right that it was a bad plan to give some guns to his employees but I was rather surprised that he didn’t seek any other alternative at all like, for example, tailing his trucks. Anyway, even if the whole thing turned out to be slightly disappointing, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

A Most Violent Year review

Chastain is excellent. Oscar Isaac had to be better to convince us of his stubborness, but fails. One gets tired of expecting the violence. Film gets better in Isaac and Chastain home.

A Most Violent Year review

I'm still waiting for something to happen here... It's not violent - what's with this title? Depicted events are lifeless. I'm not sure what I even just watched. It's drab, lifeless, not even entertaining. Characters are just plain dull.

A Most Violent Year review

The premise for this caught my attention as well as the amazing cast. The acting is quite remarkable specifically from our two mains of course. This does have some violence in it, but given the title of the film you expect more than is given. There are several moments that happen off-screen and are talked about throughout the film though. Also a few things that don't pertain to the story are mentioned in passing on the radio and such. There were a few moments that were pretty awesome though and well put together. I did think all the truck stealing stuff was an interesting idea. It's an interesting idea to make a gangster type of movie where someone is on the same level as one but tries not to be one. I think my expectations might have been a little too high. I think it could have been a little better to be honest. It was a good film, but it wasn't phenomenal. Give it a shot you may like it.
