Magda is living in poverty but she yearns in the world of the carefree richness. Despite his mother and his uncle's admonition she escapes with a light-hearted young man, Sándor Tomory, who promises her a luxurious life. Her happiness does not last long, the young man soon gets bored with her and he leaves her. In desperation Magda commits suicide. She is rescued and cured in his uncle's house. Here she learns that Tomory is arrested because of bill faking (bill falsification). Magda’s uncle, "the horologist of the soul" (“the artisan of the soul”) is trying to save Sándor’s aberrant soul.
