50 First Dates (2004) review

Posted : 2 years, 1 month ago on 28 March 2022 06:41

I will admit right now, I am not an Adam Sandler fan. However, I found this film to be surprisingly enjoyable. It is sweet and cute in places, and while certainly not a masterpiece it is above decent. A vast majority of the jokes work here, and that was great to see, and the direction was surprisingly subtle. The camera work was good making good use of the gorgeous scenery, and the soundtrack was lovely. I had little problem with the performances; Adam Sandler gives of his more likable performances, and Drew Barrymore is the persona of sweetness as his love interest. Out of the supporting performances, Rob Schneider guarantees a number of laughs, and Sean Astin comes close to stealing the film in places. But it is the chemistry of Sandler and Barrymore that shines through despite the flaws that mar it from being more than enjoyable.

While Dan Aykroyd has a small appearance, it is sadly one that isn't particularly memorable. The plot isn't exactly original, and certainly isn't the most interesting one ever. And the script does have its ups and downs, and is predictable. Overall though, it is a sweet feel good film. It has its flaws, but it is a brave attempt at a romantic comedy, and mainly because of the chemistry of the two leads it mostly succeeds. 7/10 Bethany Cox

"50 First Dates" (2004)

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Henry Roth meets Lucy Whitmore and thinks he's finally found the girl of his dreams, until he discovers she has short-term memory loss and forgets all about him the next day.
Just because Adam Sandler was in this, I was already dreading it, but I'll give anything a chance. But it turned out to be far worse than I could have expected!
First of all, as you can probably guess, the overly crass humour just annoyed the fuck out of me. Any of Rob Schneider's screen time was especially insufferable. But on top of that, the romantic side of the story is so sappy that it really gives you whiplash when it's playing off such vulgar humour. So it fails as a romantic comedy because the romance and the comedy contrast too sharply.
And don't even get me started on my issues with the film's morals! That's a discussion for a full review. But here's the gist of it: even though everyone had good intentions, I just felt like they were all simply exploiting Lucy regardless. Henry himself clearly has a conscience and knows it'd be wrong to take advantage of his fear of commitment… but he does so anyway. And as for Lucy's father and brother… well, the longer you keep up a charade, the harder it's likely to bite you in the ass.
So there you go. I hated almost everything about this movie, and I just felt bad for Drew Barrymore for appearing in it.

My rating: 20%

Romance with a ton of laughter! What more could you ask for? I really enjoyed this movie..I knew it'd be great once I heard Drew & Adam were main characters in it. Both great actors!

An average movie

Most of the time, I found Adam Sandler rather obnoxious and I have a really hard time enjoying his flicks. Indeed by now, I have seen 2/3 of his movies and most of them were just appalling. However, he has made a few decent movies and this one is definitely one of them. Once again, like most of his features, there was a concept behind the whole thing but, somehow, it actually worked. Indeed, when you think about it, it is pretty much like a romantic version of Memento and I actually enjoyed it. And considering the box-office gross, I wasn't the only one. It would be the 2nd time that Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler were working together (they are currently working on a 3rd movie) and it was much better than the abysmal ‘The Wedding Singer’. Of course, it was still nothing really mind-blowing but I thought it was a nice surprise and I thought it was rather enjoyable. For once, the general sweetness in Adam Sandler’s work was not overshadowed by the overwhelming number of gross and moronic jokes. To conclude, in my opinion, even though it was no masterpiece whatsoever, it was a major improvement on your average Adam Sandler’s production and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.

Familiar

Adam Sandler's dedication to a familiar amnesiac Drew Berrymore makes for a great on-screen romantic comedy. The real comedy however came from an unlikely hero, Drew's on-screen brother, the original Goonie himself, Sean Astin. Somehow, the story's repetitiveness never seemed to get old.
