But this is just the beginning –of this pub, of this wronged relationship, of Takada’s loneliness and of the efforts people in his circle make to not lose track of him. Other relationships will start branching out, they get more complicated in an extremely entertaining way and implicate the pub’s owner, Takada’s son and daughter, a young man who sees Takada as a mentor, the waitress’ ex-boyfriend… With all these materials, and remaining completely strange to the typical style of “festival-friendly” Japanese cinema, Rikiya Imaizumi proves he is the best kept secret in recent Japanese cinema, an auteur capable of facing such a poisoned genre as the choral romance comedy with no fear, and managing to succeed in the attempt.
