13 Going on 30 review

Posted : 12 years, 7 months ago on 10 October 2011 07:35

Jennifer Garner does a great job of portraying the wide-eyed innocence of a child in this romantic comedy that I love to watch over and over again. It's a great romantic comedy, one of the cuter/sweeter ones out there, and while sure, it doesn't add anything new to the genre and follows the standard romantic comedy formula, there is just something about it that sucks you in, and brings you back for more.

The pairing of Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo was a good choice, the writing is good, the acting is good, there is some great classic music in the film, and I love the "Big"-type movie in a newer age, and with a girl.

An average movie

I wasn't expecting much from this flick but, somehow, I still wanted to check it out. Unfortunately, indeed, it was nothing great, Iโ€™m afraid. In my opinion, the main issue with this flick is that it is based on such a very old formula. I mean, back in the 80โ€™s, they made tons of those movies (โ€˜Bigโ€™ being the most famous and probably the best one) but more than 20 years later, the whole concept felt terribly outdated and over baked. Actually, if they added something new or interesting, I could have been more intriguing but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be and they just simply followed the formula which was just terribly underwhelming. I have to admit it though, Jennifer Garner was alright and she did her best with this tedious material but I can't say she blew me away whatsoever. Eventually, the only redeeming feature was Mark Ruffalo who gave, as usual, a decent performance and I felt bad for the guy that he picked such a lame flick (at least, I hope he got a nice paycheck out of it). To conclude, I have seen worse and it is a rather harmless but it is still very average romantic comedy and I donโ€™t think it is really worth a look, except maybe if you are a die-hard fan of the genre.

When tight jeans used to be cool...

Jennifer Garner's performance is super quirky and cute and cool and great. Almost everything about this film is feel-good! Mark Ruffalo is adorable, both as a kid and an adult. The Thriller dance scene is funny and quite entertaining. And I absolutelo love the ending: tear-jerky and comedic! :)

Not Bad.

I highly enjoyed this film. It was good for a laugh or two, and it had a pretty decent story, along with a great cast. They pulled it off well. I don't think "13 Going 30" is a great film, nor even a very good film, but I recommend it to anyone that is looking for a quick film, and not a masterpiece.

13 Going on 30 review

I'm feeling some deja vu here except with a woman rather then a man. When Tom Hanks did this with Big, it could actually be funny at times and Tom Hanks pulled it off. With Jennifer Garner it was just embarrassing and completely unbelievable. Watching her trying to act like a 13 year old inside a 30 year olds body was beyond aggravating.
Basically, it's been done before and it shouldn't have been done again.
