Michael Hirst was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. He grew up in Ilkley and attended Bradford Grammar School before studying at the London School of Economics and the University of Nottingham, where he earned a First Class Joint-Honours Degree in English and American Literature. He later studied Henry James at Trinity College, Oxford.
Initially aspiring to be an academic, Hirst's career path changed when director Nicolas Roeg read one of his short stories and asked him to write screenplays. This led Hirst to become a screenwriter and producer. He is best known for creating and writing the Emmy Award-winning television
