Mestre Bimba was a complete capoeirista, admired even by his opponents. He was very good in playing, he used to make ginga as anyone else and to play the berimbau with an unsurpassed skill. He was an excellent singer, besides, he knew all that was referring to african-Brazilian culture.
Manoel dos Reis Machado, Mestre Bimba was born in Bahia on November 23 1900, son of Maria Martinha do Bonfim and of Luis Candido Machado, the champion of the Batuque (a fight made by destabilizing scams).
His first contact with the capoeira was in the Estrada da Boiada, today known as the neibourhood Liberdade, in Salvador (BA). He was a disciple of Master Bentinho, captain of the Shipping Company from Bahia. In 1932 Mestre Bimba founded the first academy specializing in Capoeira, in the “Engenho Velho de Brotas”, the neighborhood where he grew up. At the time, he had already developed his own method.
In 1937 he was registered as a physical education teacher and in 1939 was teaching the “Regional” in the Reserve Officer Training Corps headquarters. He opened his second academy in 1942. For its efficiency, his method was considered the most practical and perfect, that’s why it crossed the border and became known worldwide.
In 1973 Mestre Bimba moved to Goiâna, where he died of a stroke a year later.
