Martin Ritt was an American film and theater director and actor, noted for his socially conscious films. Films he directed include "The Long, Hot Summer" (1958), "Hud" (1963), "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" (1965), "Hombre" (1967), "The Great White Hope" (1970), "Sounder" (1972), "Conrack" (1974), "The Front" (1976), "Norma Rae" (1979) and "Murphy's Romance" (1985). Ritt also served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and appeared in the Air Forces' Broadway play and film "Winged Victory".
