For these some films that I've seen from Dreyer, he likes to handle religious themes and incredible relationships within people and Day of Wrath isn't an expectation here. Christianity controls the dignity of the people in a breathtakingly deep way. The relationships within this twisted family are exactly as twisted as the first impression tells us. Difficult marriage all the other human contacts that Anne has in this film are just touching and impressive. And the visual beauty of the film? No more or less than one of the most beautiful films ever made. The stars in the leading roles - Preben Lerdorff Rye (as Martin), Lisbeth Movin (as Anne), Thorkild Roose (as Absalon), Sigrid Neiiendam (as Absalon's mother) and Anna Svierkier (as Herlofs Marte) - are no big names but they sure are brilliant.

I've said countless times that I love Visconti's works. La Terra Trema isn't an exception, it might just be the ultimate proof for that. Visconti had an idea of film trilogy, which La Terra Trema should have started following with two film: one about the strike of the sulphur miners and one about the victory of the farmers over the land divisions. La Terra Trema tell the most melancholic story about fisherman family in the Sicily, whose life is like a roller-coaster. Films shows the differences between social classes and the underdogs of the society. The actors of the film are all amateur Sicilian actors which speak such a different dialect that I had to be subtitled in Italy at the time! Actors are all great making the realistic and yet so poetic atmosphere.

First I found hard to love any other westerns than Leone's. I liked the others but actually never loved them before. Then I found Jodorowsky. Then I found John Ford. These three directors familiar with westerns have all their own style and it is impossible to compare these three masters. I haven't seen too many films from Ford's massive filmography but from all of these I've seen, I found My Darling Clementine the best. Film starts with such a power and the atmosphere keeps getting better and better in the film. Henry Fonda, Victor Mature and Linda Darnell are just marvellous in their roles. Brilliant story, great characters in tangled relationships, breathtaking visual beauty, brutal violence and a touch of humour. This film has it all.

It took me quite a while to get known to the filmography of Max Ophüls. I started my journey maybe with the most popular film from Ophüls, Letter from an Unknown Woman. And after seeing this one, I've had desperate need to see more films from Ophüls. This passionate and yet so desperate love story takes no time to swallow the viewer into it and the story charms in every way. This melodrama is just unique and perfect and for that we can thank for few names but one to mention is Howard Koch, who also wrote Casablanca. The main characters - Lisa Berndle and Stefan Brand - are absolutely brilliant and the performances by Joan Fontaine and Louis Jourdan are both tremendous. Camera moves smoothly and black-and-white images are breathtakingly beautiful.

1940's is the decade of the most iconic films ever made. Without a doubt, Casablanca is one of these most iconic films in the film history and it is such a cliché to include this film in this kind of lists. But that is a cliché that I wasn't even planning to avoid. Two incredible actors - Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman - together in the same film and having one of the greatest love stories ever. Mystery in the story is thrilling and so the whole film has its own atmosphere.

There is something overwhelmingly alluring in Ingrid Bergman. Her combined with the mysterious Hitchcock, you can't go wrong. And when you put up in there also Salvador Dali, we have nearly perfect Spellbound. The study of psychoanalysis is far too interesting and the complex love story is somewhat Hitchcock at his bests. Dream sequence designed by Dali is also something for the film that is beautiful all way through.

Considered as the most beautiful achievement of Technicolor and not without a reason. Seriously the age doesn't show at all in the visual beauty of the film and the short knowledge of Technicolor films I might be agreeing that this is the most beautiful one. The passion of dancing and the passionate and yet so mysterious love story gathers all the sympathy for the characters. It is amazing how deeply you get connected into them even in the early seconds of the film, when the students are listening the ballet music and realizing that their compositions have been stolen. From the very moment the viewer gets interested in the character of Julian Craster and not so long after introducing him we get familiar to Vicky Page. And you shouldn't forger the great Boris Lermontov. The horrors of the dancer and the lover are shown beautifully in the dancing scenes and the agony of the artist is shown all way through the film.

Story is based on the James M. Cain story The Postman Always Rings Twice and Visconti happened to have a lot of problems to premier his film in the USA, which is not a surprise after the war and the relation between USA and Italy, and the fact that Visconti didn't even have all the rights for filming Cain's novel. After Ossessione Visconti directed few films based on a novel and Ossessione as this his debut film is definitely one of his greatest ones of them all. Film is full of weird relationships and the fool in the middle of them is the trampy character Gino Costa, who gets involved into married couple, a prostitute and a street artist. Interesting thing here is that this street artist is a man and their relationship is shown with this tense atmosphere. The thrilling love story is both surprising and bloody and so the enjoyment of the viewer is confirmed. Black-and-white images are beautiful and the performances by Clara Calamai and Massimo Girotti are amazing.

The crime gets your attention and it deserves it. It is planned brilliantly and it shows us the real character of our heroes and heroines. This is, by far, my favorite film from Orson Welles. Rita Hayworth is somewhat one of the most beautiful women on the Earth ever and her presence in this film more than nice. Great performance from her and the other name I would like to bring up is Everett Sloane as Mr. Bannister.

Mysterious atmosphere throughout the film is something that you don't feel everyday. Except if you watch this film every day. Film gets deep into characters history and the story of the main character, Sister Clodagh (performed by amazing Deborah Gerr), is interesting and done by the most brilliant way. Kathleen Byron's performance as Sister Ruth isn't any worse than Kerr's and maybe she is even better than Kerr is. The visual beauty of this film is also quite something and you can get some taste from the picture above.

Although The Tramp is a great character by Chaplin, it is nice to see him in totally different and charming role. Monsieur Verdoux as a character is one of the kind cheater and player and Chaplin's performance is tremendous and the affect that he has got from Tramp is quite clear. Little sympathetic story with dark comedy is definitely one of the greatest achievements by Chaplin.

Without a doubt, Sergei Eisenstein is one of the most influential film makers in this planet. The little I've seen has convinced me quite well and Ivan the Terrible is one of the greatest films ever made. Closeups are just as strong and beautiful as in Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc and that is a lot said about any film. The difference here is that Ivan the Terrible is sort of 'epic' film with the big halls and the mountain landscapes and Dreyer's film is more like a courtroom drama. Large sets gets their benefits as the shadows reflects beautifully on the walls and the bloody massive fighting scenes blazes with the beauty. Stalinist pressure is present in the most lovely way and Nikolai Cherkasov is absolutely brilliant in his role.

There is definitely something in these Ozu's family portraits. I haven't seen too many of them but still I can say that Late Spring is some of the strongest ones. Family relationships are in the middle and handled very beautifully, as usual in Ozu's films. Setsuko Hara is loveable and the storyline is pure enjoyment.

The weird story and the twists in this film noir is something that you rarely see. As film noirs has a habit, black-and-white-pictures are beautifully controlled with lightning and by a tender camera work. Laura represents film noir at its bests in the most unique way.

I don't know specific reason why it took me some time to gather some courage to watch this indisputable film noir classic. Suspense is indisputable and the story is constructs swallowing the viewer deep into its mystery. Joseph Cotten and Alida Valli are great in their roles.

Citizen Kane is again one of these iconic films from the decade. The film is often considered as the 'greatest film ever made' by critics world wide and for example, the film is listed as a number one in the Top 1000 films by They Shoot Pictures Don't They. Orson Welles' great debut is surely ambitious and by that he happened to change film history. As a director, writer and actor Welles is great in this one.

The first King Vidor film that I saw, and after this my hunger has gotten even bigger for him. Howard Roark is just the kind of man of principles that you can't stop adoring ans the same goes for Dominique Francin. And it is just lovely to see how the characters in this film turn from loathsome into totally loveable and maybe in some cases vice versa. Story and the dialogue is just pure awesomeness. Performances by the actors in leading roles - Cary Cooper, Patricia Neil and Raymond Massey - are just perfect.

Another iconic film from the Italian neorealism era and definitely the best film from Vittorio De Sica that I've seen. The working class is shown beautifully as the neorealistic films has the habit and the actors are brilliant.

Another iconic film of its decade. And is there anything about The Great Dictator that hasn't been said yet? Brave satire and the master Chaplin in incredible double role.

Paisà (1946)

The second part of Rossellini's War trilogy tells six different stories. Andre Bazin once hailed Paisan as the perfect replication for a collection of short stories. Each story handles the communication problems within American soldiers and Italian citizens in its own way. All the characters are allowed to speak their own native language - you can hear German soldiers shouting in some distance. Acting is more or less amateurish but it gives the film that real atmosphere and great characters.

I have to start this with praising the woman's pride and Ann Blyth - talented, young and beautiful actress playing Mildred's daughter Veda. Afger this I could praise Joan Crawford, the story itself and the beauty of the film but quite nothing compares to Blyth. Revoltingly teisted love and murder story is something that you could never hate and there is enought something to love.

I'm the most familiar with Kurosawa's samurai films but lately I've started to get known to his filmography little better. It makes no difference whether the film includes samurai or not, Kurosawa is always sensei of arts. Drunken Angel touches me personally in a such a deep way that it is even hard to define to total strangers. Beautiful pictures and themes takes this movie experience to the other level and Toshirô Mifune is great as always.

I found it so unbelievably hard to love this film. Important men with their mighty moustaches decided to cut 45 minutes of the film - including "the whole point", according to mr. Welles himself - and re-shoot the end of the film. Welles was never satisfied to the result and it was one of his greatest dream to re-shoot the ending again. Unfortunately that dream never came true. Still I do find this film lovely. The Magnificent Ambersons shows the whole life of bourgeois family and the ever changing society around them.

Hitchcock is the one that nobody couldn't possibly hate. Shadow of a Doubt is another great film from British artist from his American era. Little idyllic American family is shown in the beautiful way and the dark secret that this idyll is hiding is quite something. Characters, especially two Charlies are great and they make this film work well.

Cocteau never considered himself as a film maker, but a poet. It's a cliché to say this, but Beauty and the Beast is the evidence that he surely was both. Visual beauty with the magical and surreal atmosphere makes this film such a wonderful experience. Josette Day surely is a great choice for playing beautiful Belle and Jean Marais is tender and loving Beast.

Rebecca might just be the Hitckcock film that is filled with the most awkward moments. Those consist the most from ruining Mrs. de Winter's not just marriage, but also life in purpose. Jean Fontaine is just adorable in her role and Laurence Oliver cool headed millionaire with the darkest history.

Anges du péche is convincing début from Bresson and its religious, sinful and moralistic themes are something that really show up. The anxious relationship between Anne-Marie and Thérèse is one of the kind. Shooting with professional actors isn't typical Bresson, but besides that this is so typical Bresson as possible. Renée Faure is simply great in her role and whole movie is enjoyment for the viewer.

Listing this film might seem a bit elementary, but this Disney's short has such a huge nostalgic value that I couldn't avoid it. I've seen this film somewhat six thousand times and after all those viewings it is hard not to love this one.
