I am placing ALEXANDER (2004) here based only on the original theatrical release. Mr.Stone's dissatisfaction with this cut of the film (due, I believe, to having to abide by unfavorable contractual obligations)has led to releases of 2 other different edits for subsequent home entertainment, the 2nd of which -- and which I am eager to see but haven't at this time -- is the filmmaker's preferred vision and I may revise its ranking upon viewing it.

Feature films made by the great filmmaker ranked mainly in my order of preference.
I do not include any of his documentaries (like South of the Border or JFK Revisited: Through the Looking Glass) or work for television -- from notable interviews and the highly recommendable multi-part "The Untold History of the United States" to the surreal drama for ABC, "Wild Palms" (1993). ( (Nor do I, obviously, include films for which he was the principle screenwriter only -- Midnight Express, several drafts of Conan the Barbarian, Scarface, Year of the Dragon, 8 Million Ways to Die, Evita).
As noted in the descriptions for other entries in this series, a lower ranking does not indicate that I think of that particular movie as "bad"; the lists in this "director's series" are arranged simply in order of personal preference (and, at a later date, I will provide more extensive notes discussing each film and reasons for its particular placement.
As always, films I have yet to see are collected at the end of the list proper and will be identified as such.
