The Great Dictator (1941)
30.12.
Blu-ray, 2nd viewing
DIRECTED BY Charles Chaplin
Disappointing. I considered this a masterpiece when I was in high school but now it feels like a pretty mediocre film built around a legendary ending. Chaplin is one of my heroes but I guess silent films were his actual forte. I need to re-watch Limelight soon, maybe that one is a bit more mature sound film.

Good film to view on my birthday. This could be a masterpiece in the hands of a more adept director but, as it is, it's merely a half-entertaining (the first half is gold thanks to Cage's antics) film that is at least 30 minutes too long and becomes horribly cheesy after the halfway point. I believe Cage singing opera cures cancer, though.

After this and The Green Ray, I think I'm finding my new favorite French director in Éric Rohmer (even though, for some reason, I didn't care much for My Night at Maud's). The dialogue is so sharp and the presence of the characters is so tangible in his films.

I like the first 45 minutes or so when it builds up the tension with almost no jump scares. Unfortunately the film turns rather bad when that Slipknot guitarist starts to make regular appearances. I also hate foreboding-looking kids with bad make-up in modern horror films.

I thought this had some issues with finding its tone; its whole premise is so silly and yet the film is mostly pretty serious - bar the cartoony character of Tilda Swinton whose performance, I guess, was pretty good because I don't remember the last time I've been this annoyed by a character. Also some of the action scenes could've been a lot better.
A very interesting concept, some nice twists and turns to the plot (if one doesn't bother too much about them making a lot of sense) and excellent set design save a lot.

Mac Devin Go to High School (2012)
13.10.

DIRECTED BY Dylan C. Brown
Snoop Dogg is going on his 15th year at high (lol) school. He's not doing much studying, though, as he spends, in his own words, every minute of his life smoking weed. Enter young hot chemistry teacher; our droopy-eyed hero finds a love interest. Here's where the plot thickens: in order to date the teacher, Snoop Dogg must graduate, for obvious moral reasons. Snoop hooks up with Wiz Khalifa and the duo smokes a lot of kush while a terribly ugly anthropomorphized CGI blunt pops up every now and then to educate the viewer about marijuana. In the end I don't even remember if Snoop gets the girl but I do remember he and Wiz come up with an alternative source of energy whose secret ingredient is... well, I won't spoil that for you.
Last week I made an analogy that Snoop Dogg is the Nicolas Cage of music: he apparently accepts each and every project he's offered, provided he's got the time for it. In fact, a more precise analogy would be to claim he is the Nicolas Cage of the show business: he does not seem to limit himself to only inexplicable musical projects (example).
Without Snoop Dogg, this would be a solid contender for worst film I've ever seen. However, considering I do find Snoop Dogg one of the most hilarious people on the planet and probably the most important entertainer of the past 20 years, a true global Spede Pasanen of the internet age, I was pretty fucking entertained. The rating doesn't matter.

Mitä paremmin pystyy sietämään elokuvan epäilyttävän kokoomuslaisen pohjavireen, sitä nautittavampi se on. Lähdin tähän aika skeptisellä asenteella, mutta elokuva voittikin minut puolelleen. Will Smith poikineen vetää yllättävän sympaattiset roolit ja optimismi on heikkouteni. Siirappi mielestäni pääosin kiitettävästi vältetty.
Jonkin verran kurjuudessa vellomista ja luuskannereiden perässä juoksemista olisi tästä voinut karsia, ja Willin vaimosta olisi voinut saada moniulotteisemmankin hahmon (elokuva muuttuu huomattavasti paremmaksi, kun kyseinen hahmo poistuu kuvioista).

Violent, masculine, edgy, witty-dialogue, post-Pulp Fiction crime action film is probably one of my least favorite genres so I've avoided this film until now.
And it's largely what I expected it to be (written above). It's also visually ugly and it suffers from some bad directing, terrible use of music and editing. What salvages it from being complete dreg is that it's energetic and thus fairly entertaining to watch, and - most importantly - the amazing Willem Dafoe and his beautiful face.

This film has some really messy story-telling - most of the time I had no idea what the fuck was going on - but what elevates this to the upper echelon of Nicolas Cage's recent filmography is that it gives an impression of the guy actually having a lot of fun with this role. I imagine this depiction is very close to what Cage is like in real life. This is probably his best performance since Bad Lieutenant (which I rank among his very best).
I also appreciate how it tries a different take on the heist film genre. It's a shame the film-making is so confusing.

Elokuva ei juurikaan naurata, muttei myöskään liiemmin tylsistytä tai loukkaa huonoudellaan.
Helvetin kova filmografia tän elokuvan ohjaajalla on myös: Dr. Dolittle 2, Daddy Day Care, Movie 43, Paul Blart: Mall Cop... tuossa seurassa Next Friday on Citizen Kane.

Jotenkin nää Herzogin fiktioelokuvat on kaikki vaan ihan OK. Näissä on fiilis niinku istuis kattomassa VHS:ää jossain yläasteen historian tunnilla.

A guy considered a no-good loser by his workmates fulfills his dream of becoming a rock star with the help of a turtle who accidentally gets flushed down the toilet only to end up in a colony of lost toys and animals and a homeless man who's actually Santa Claus. A weird movie even by Sion Sono standards.
I was ready to 5-star this after the first five minutes or so but unfortunately it loses steam as it goes on. Could've done some editing. I felt like there was a lot of redundancy and I think a faster pace and shorter runtime would generally compliment a film with such crazy content.

Onneksi loppupuolen täysin käsittämätön nyrkkitappelu Gibsonin Melin ja Buseyn Garyn välillä tuo huumorin elokuvaan takaisin ja samalla joulumielikin nousee pilviin, vaikka on vasta syyskuu. Lisäksi elokuvan saksofoni- ja sähkökitaravetoinen soundtrack on todennäköisesti Eric Claptonin uran hienoin hetki ja Danny Glover lausumassa sanat "I'm too old for this shit" parantaa syövän. 3/5 katsoisin jatko-osat.
