Victoria Winters' mysterious journey begins as her train arrives in Collinsport, a small and stormy fishing village on the coast of Maine. An orphan in search of her identity, Victoria is befriended by a stranger named Burke Devlin. At the eerie Collinwood mansion, Victoria meets reclusive matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, her aloof brother Roger Collins, his troubled ten-year-old son David, and Elizabeth's rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn.



Collins fishing fleet manager Bill Malloy informs Elizabeth that Burke wants to take everything the Collinses own as revenge for being sent to prison. Collinsport Inn waitress Maggie Evans tells her father Sam that she wants an end to the conflict between him, Roger and Burke. David warns Victoria that she will regret she came to live at Collinwood and be his governess.
Episodes 36 - 70

Collinwood's surly caretaker, Matthew Morgan informs Victoria Winters that he believes the ghost of Josette Collins and other spirits inhabit the estate. In an attempt to settle the controversy surrounding the manslaughter case that sent Burke Devlin to prison, Collins Fishing Fleet manager Bill Malloy sets up a private meeting for himself, Roger Collins, Sam Evans and Burke.



Elizabeth Collins Stoddard confides to Victoria some of the legends involving Collinwood and Widows' Hill. Carolyn Stoddard and Victoria spot a body floating at the bottom of the cliff and Victoria experiences a strange premonition. After Bill Malloy disappears, Roger nervously bribes Sam to leave town. A ghost emerges from the Old House on the Collins family property.

Victoria Winters assures Carolyn Stoddard that her loyalties lie with the Collins family, not with Burke Devlin. Victoria makes a startling discovery near the ocean. David Collins visits Burke at the Collinsport Inn and insists his father is a murder. Burke makes an offer to Elizabeth Collins Stoddard to buy Collinwood. Roger Collins frantically searches to recover evidence that may incriminate him.



Annoyed with Carolyn, Joe Haskell begins to turns his affections toward Maggie Evans. David leads Victoria to the closed-off section of Collinwood, where she is stunned by the appearance of a ghost. Caretaker Matthew Morgan tries to dissuade Mrs. Johnson from coming to work at Collinwood. In Bangor, Victoria meets lawyers Richard and Frank Garner, who she hopes will help to unlock the mysteries of her past.

When Victoria Winters searches the Old House for David Collins, she is abducted and held captive by Matthew Morgan, the Collinses' fugitive caretaker who is hiding following the death of family friend Bill Malloy. A massive search is held to find Victoria. An angry and jealous Joe Haskell fights with Burke Devlin after he catches Carolyn Stoddard, his girlfriend, with Burke in his room at the Collinsport Inn. A mysterious woman visits the diner and asks waitress Maggie Evans about the Collins family.



The ghost of Josette Colins appears to Matthew and attempts to protect Victoria. Sam Evans reveals to a stunned Roger Collins that Roger's estranged wife, Laura, has returned. Sam begins to paint a bizarre portrait of a woman surrounded by flames, which he cannot explain. Burke hopes to get Laura to clear him of the manslaughter charge that sent him to prison. Laura tells her son, David, the story of the immortal creature known as a Phoenix and he has a terrifying nightmare about his mother.
Episodes 144 - 178

Victoria Winters and Frank Garner anxiously search for clues to Laura Collins' strange origins and are led to a series of bizarre discoveries. Elizabeth Collins Stoddard orders Laura to leave Collinwood, but Laura secretly visits Elizabeth while she sleeps and places her in a trance. Laura warns Victoria that she will take control of her son, David Collins, but becomes frightened when the ghost of Josette Collins appears to her. Against Roger Collins' wishes, a psychic investigator, Dr. Peter Guthrie, is called in to examine the strange occurances at Collinwood and a seance is held. Victoria and Guthrie learn that the body of a dead woman identified as Laura has disappeared from the morgue in Phoenix, Arizona.
Episodes 179 - 210

Dr. Peter Guthrie and Joe Haskell break into Laura Murdoch Stockbridge's crypt at Eagle Hill Cemetery. David Collins informs Victoria Winters that he wants to go away with his mother, Laura. Guthrie arranges to conduct a seance at the Old House to contact Josette Collins’ ghost. Victoria makes a bizarre discovery that leads her to believe David’s life is in jeopardy after Laura summons him to an abandoned fishing shack. Victoria sees Elizabeth Collins Stoddard coming from the mysterious locked room in the Collinwood basement.



A nervous Elizabeth is shocked when Jason McGuire, a devious friend of her missing husband’s, arrives in town unexpectedly. He reminids [sic] Elizabeth of an old secret that they share. Jason and his traveling companion, a drifter named Willie Loomis, force Elizabeth to let them move into Collinwood. Willie learns that Collins family members have been buried with their jewels and he becomes mesmerized by the portrait of Barnabas Collins hanging in the foyer.
Episodes 210-250

Released from his chained coffin after nearly 200 years, Barnabas Collins arrives at the Collinwood estate claiming to be a relative from England. Although noticing Barnabas' resemblance to his "ancestor" in the foyer portrait, the Collins family does not realize he is the same Barnabas who lived at Collinwood in the 18th century. As Barnabas moves into the Old House on the property, those around him are unaware of the horrors that will soon follow.

As Elizabeth Collins Stoddard prepares to marry blackmailer Jason McGuire, she reveals a dark secret to governess Victoria Winters. Posing as an historian, Dr. Julia Hoffman arrives at Collinwood to investigate Maggie's disappearance.

Dr. Julia Hoffman promises Barnabas that his secret is safe if he will allow her to conduct experiments to cure him of his vampirism. Jealous of Victoria Winters' engagement to Burke Devlin, Barnabas plans revenge against Burke, who becomes suspicious of Barnabas and begins to investigate him. While trying to hide from Barnabas, David Collins becomes trapped in the secret room of the Collins Mausoleum. The frightened boy pleads with the ghost of Sarah Collins to rescue him. Barnabas realizes that David may hold the key to finding his late sister's spirit.

During a séance at Collinwood to contact the spirit of Barnabas' young sister Sarah, Victoria Winters mysteriously disappears and finds that she has traveled back in time to the year 1795.

The family moves into the newly-built Collinwood mansion and the fanatical witch-hunting Reverend Trask is summoned to exorcise the Old House. A vengeful Angelique places a vampire curse on Barnabas.

In 1969, Carolyn Stoddard invites Chris Jennings to move into the caretaker's cottage on the Collinwood estate, unaware that Chris is harboring a dark and deadly secret. In the woods, Carolyn is attacked by a werewolf. Maggie Evans searches for David Collins in the abandoned west wing of Collinwood and is terrified to discover the ghost of Quentin Collins. Professor Stokes is summoned to exorcise the haunted mansion, which the Collins Family is forced to abandon.

In 1897, Barnabas is a vampire once again and introduces himself at Collinwood as a cousin from England. He meets governess Rachel Drummond and is amazed by her resemblance to his lost love Josette. A suspicious Quentin enlists sorcerer Evan Hanley to raise a spirit to combat Barnabas, resulting in the apperance of the vengeful witch Angelique. Magda the gypsy warns Quentin that he is in grave danger and Edward Collins is shocked when his mysterious, long-absent wife Laura returns for their children.

Jamison Collins finds Barnabas' coffin in the Old House and reveals the discovery to his father Edward. Carl Collins returns from Atlantic City with a showgirl and mentalist named Pansy Faye. She uses her psychic abilities during a séanceto help determine the fate of servant Dirk Wilkins, who rises as a vampire after being attacked by Barnabas.

Scheming to gain control of the Collins wealth, Gregory Trask and Evan Hanley plot to drive matriarch Judith Collins insane by taunting her with the spirit of Minerva Trask. Quentin enlists the aid of Angelique the witch to retrieve Petofi's hand from a mysterious stranger named Aristede. Once his identity is discovered, Petofi brings artist Charles Delaware Tate to Collinwood to paint a portrait of Quentin. During a full moon, Charity Trask witnesses the painting take on the appearance of the werewolf. When Jamison Collins is possessed with the spirit of the dying David Collins from 1969, Petofi promises to save the boy if Barnabas reveals how to travel to the future.

Quentin is shocked to discover from a possessed Jamison Collins that Quentin's ghost is menacing Collinwood in the 20th century, causing David Collins to hover near death. Hoping to save Barnabas, Julia Hoffman conducts an I-Ching ceremony in 1969 and is transported back in time to 1897.

Secretly cured of his vampirism, Barnabas Collins reappears, claiming to be a British relative. Mesmerized by Josette's portrait. Lady Kitty Hampshire begins to believe she is Barnabas' lost love. When Kitty vanishes, Barnabas follows her back in time to the year 1796. He is chosen to become the human leader of the Leviathans, an ancient race from another world. The ghost of Jenny Collins warns Chris Jennings in 1969 that Quentin is the only one who can save him from the werewolf curse.

He discovers the young boy living at the antique shop is a member of the other-worldly race. Dr. Julia Hoffman's investigations to find a cure for Chris Jennings lead her to the elderly artist Charles Delaware Tate. After revealing that she really is Amanda Harris from 1897, Olivia Corey tries to help Quentin regain his memory. While searching for Quentin's mystical portrait, Julia meets art collector Sky Rumson and learns he is married to Angelique the witch. Barnabas begs Angelique for her supernatural help to overthrow the Leviathans.

Leviathan leader Jeb Hawkes summons an army of zombies to kidnap Julia, hoping she can make him human. Sabrina Stuart tries to prevent her boyfriend Chris Jennings from the sinister Bruno who has learned the identity of the werewolf. Barnabas is startled to discover a room in Collinwood's east wing which serves as a portal to a parallel universe.

Scientist Cyrus Longworth continues his laboratory experiments to separate the good and evil in man. upon drinking the potion, he transforms into the sinister John Yaeger and terrorizes barmaid Buffie Harrington. Housekeeper Julia Hoffman learns a dark and deadly secret. Maggie Collins suspects that her husband Quentin may have been responsible for Angelique's demise.

In 1970, the ghost of Daphne Harridge, a nineteenth century governess, appears to Quentin, who locates her diary in the west wing. Barnabas is stunned when he meets astrologist Sebastian Shaw's assistant, Roxanne Drew, who is identical to the Roxanne that Barnabas knew in parallel time. When Julia discovers fang marks on Maggie Evans' neck, Barnabas assures her that he is not responsible and vows to find the vampire who attacked Maggie. David Collins and Hallie Stokes become possessed by the spirits of Tad Collins and Carrie Collins from 1840.

Lamar Trask enlists psychic Leticia Faye to use her powers to find out the fate of his father, Reverend Trask, who disappeared in 1795. Using the name Valerie as an alias, Angelique the witch returns and learns that Barnabas has been released from his coffin. She warns him that unless they live together as man and wife, she will cause his true love, Roxanne Drew, to become a vampire.

Gabriel Collins plots to revise his father Daniel's will so that he and Edith Collins will inherit the entire family fortune. After reading servant Ben Stoke's diary from 1795, Trask finds the skeleton of his father bricked up in The Old House basement and plans revenge on Barnabas. Angelique realizes that Barnabas' claim that Gerard Stiles is possessed by Judah Zachery may be true.

Barnabas begs Angelique to use her powers to help save Quentin Collins from being executed for practicing witchcraft. Using Quentin's stairway through time, Barnabas, Julia and Professor Stokes travel back to the future. In 1841 parallel time, Bramwell Collins insists that Catherine Harridge marry him instead of Morgan Collins. As the family's oldest son, Morgan is placed in charge of the dreaded lottery, where a family member is selected to endure a night in a mysterious, cursed room. Kendrick Young discovers that his lover Melanie Collins suffers from a split personality. Carrie Stokes reveals that Morgan is possessed by James Forsythe, the man who placed the curse on the Collinses in 1680. The ghost of Brutus Collins taunts Morgan.

After marrying Kendrick Young, Melanie Collins becomes insane. Morgan is enraged to learn Catherine and Bramwell have resumed their romance. As crises continue to surround them, the Collins family struggle to survive, hoping to finally end the curse that has brought so much sorrow.
