The Strange World of Coffin Joe (1968)

The film is a collection of three short films titled O Fabricante de Bonecas (The Dollmaker), Tara (Obsession), and Ideologia (Theory). Coffin Joe only appears briefly in the role of a horror host, introducing the segments, and the film is not a part of the Coffin Joe trilogy (At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul, This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse, and Embodiment of Evil).

Trilogia de Terror (1968)

The film consists of 3 stories adapted from the Brazilian TV series Além, Muito Além do Além (Beyond, Much Beyond the Beyond): O Acordo (The Agreement), A Procissão dos Mortos (Procession of Dead), and Pesadelo Macabro (Macabre Nightmare). Only Macabre Nightmare was directed by Jose Mojica Marins.

Awakening of the Beast (1970)

In the film's first portion, filmed in black and white, Dr. Sergio, a psychiatrist, appears on a television program on a panel with three other contemporary psychiatrists after he claims to have conducted experiments on four volunteer drug addicts with LSD in order to investigate his claim that sexual perversion is caused by use of illegal drugs. As evidence, he presents a series of documented accounts of drug use which led to lewd and bizarre sexual acts. Marins appears (as himself) on the panel with the psychiatrists as some type of expert on the subject of depravity. During the program, Dr. Sergio recounts the experiment to his colleagues on the panel, who reject his claims. Dr. Sergio gathers the four volunteers, and after receiving an injection, the volunteers (four drug users seen in the previous segments) are instructed to stare at a movie poster of Marins' The Strange World of Coffin Joe. The film changes to color and each patient's experience is vividly portrayed in a series of surreal scenes.

The End of Man (1971)

Stark naked man (Marins) comes out from the sea and begins to walk the streets, interfering in daily episodes, always in search of justice. He names himself Finis Hominis (The End of Man, in latin), and soon becomes sort of a modern Messiah, capable of performing miracles. An adulterous woman and a cheated husband are among his most faithful followers, as well as a group of hippies.

When the Gods Fall Asleep (1972)

The film is a sequel to Marins' 1971 film The End of Man (Finis Hominis), in which the character of Finis Hominis, an influential, messianic culture figure turns out to be an escaped mental patient. Rather than the horror themes which Marins was noted for, the film, like its predecessor, is low budget black humored social satire. In this film, Finis Hominis (after returning to the asylum) again feels the need to escape the asylum in order to put right the world's increasing social unrest that he sees in the news.

The Bloody Exorcism of Coffin Joe

The director José Mojica Marins travels to spend Christmas with friends in the small farm where they live and write the story of his next film. However, he observes eerie things in the house, with his friends being possessed one by one by some supernatural evil force. Sooner he learns that the matriarch of the family had made a deal with a local witch Malvina to get pregnant and save her marriage. In return, Malvina should indicate who would marry the girl. However, her daughter Wilma is engaged of her beloved fiancé and Malvina wants her to get married with Eugenio, who is the son of Satan. Further, José Mojica Marins discovers that his fictional creation Zé do Caixão (a.k.a. Coffin Joe) is ready to collect the souls of Wilma's family and only and exorcism may save the doomed family.

Strange Hostel of Naked Pleasures (1976)

In an isolated inn called "Hospedaria dos Prazeres" (Hostel of Pleasures), the mysterious proprietor (Marins) advertises for employees to serve his guests while they stay the night of a tempestuous storm. As the storm gathers and night falls, various people begin to show up. The proprietor allows some to stay while informing others that there are no vacancies. Mysteriously the guest book is already filled with the names of the permitted guests before they arrive.

Hellish Flesh

Dr. George Medeiros (Marins) is a brilliant scientist who does not find time for beautiful wife Rachel. She falls in love with Oliver, the best friend of her husband, and soon after the two plan to kill George and inherit his fortune. Benefiting from the distraction of her husband in the laboratory, Raquel throws acid on George's face, disfiguring it. As he recovers in the hospital, Raquel and Oliver spend all his money. After months in the hospital, Dr. George comes home with a plan for revenge in mind.

Hallucinations of a Deranged Mind (1978)

The story is built around Dr. Hamílton, a psychiatrist who is terrorized by nightmares in which Coffin Joe tries to steal his wife. His colleagues decide to seek medical help with the assistance of filmmaker Jose Mojica Marins (appearing as himself), who tries to reassure Dr. Hamílton that Coffin Joe is merely a creation of his mind. The story is built around a montage of scenes that were omitted or censored from four of Marins' earlier films.

Embodiment of Evil

A flashback scene in the film reveals that the young Coffin Joe (portrayed in the scene by Raymond Castile) survived after submerging in a swamp at the end of the previous film. After serving 40 years in a prison mental ward, Coffin Joe (José Mojica Marins) is released to the streets of modern-day São Paulo. Immediately after his release, Coffin Joe renews his lifelong obsession to sire a male child with a woman whom he perceives to be of exceptional qualities capable of continuing his bloodline, which he feels to be "superior" above all others. It is the third installment in his Coffin Joe trilogy, featuring Marins reprising his role as Zé do Caixão (in English, Coffin Joe). The film is preceded by At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul (1963) and This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse (1967).

Demons and Wonders

In the film Marins focuses on himself in scenes recounting life and experiences in filmmaking, with much focus on Marins' many battles with Brazilian film censors. Marins began filming a second installment of the film called Alucinação Macabra (Macabre Hallucination), which consisted of scenes from his films mixed with video segments. Although all filming was completed, the film was never edited or released due to finances.

Zé do Caixão, known in the English speaking world as Coffin Joe, is a character created and nominally played by Brazilian writer, director, and actor Jose Mojica Marins. An amoral undertaker with Nietzschian beliefs, he is driven by his desire to have a son by "the perfect woman", believing that immortality is achieved through procreation, a concept he refers to as "the continuation of blood". He often resorts to murder, kidnapping, and rape to achieve his means, with his violent nature, atheism, and antagonism towards Christianity placing him into conflict with his largely Catholic neighbors. Despite his own disbelief in the supernatural, he often finds himself experiencing paranormal phenomena, including encounters with ghosts, Death, and visions of Hell.

Initially conceived of by Marins to serve as the antagonist in At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul, Brazil's first horror film, Coffin Joe has gone on to appear in nine more films, three television series, songs, music videos, and comic books. Called "Brazil's National Boogeyman", he is considered the country's most iconic horror villain, on a par with Freddy Kruger in the United States.
