Best Attended Pearl Jam Concerts

Sort by: Showing 15 items
Rating: List Type:
#15.
August 23, 1998 The Palace Of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, MI (Cheap Trick Opener)

Summery:
This was the 4th concert experience of my entire life,(Monkees, Metallica and Beastie Boys)1st PJ. The 1st and last song of my 1st PJ show featured tunes I had never heard before, but would now kill to hear again(Long Road, Fuckin Up).

The reason this show ranks at the bottom is because of the seats, crowd, and my overall lack of memory.

Attendees; Brad

Seats: 2nd Row, in the upper level almost the opposite side of the stage. Only people in the upper level to stand for the show.

Show Highlights; Some Canadian drunk fan jumped on the stage during the performance and Eddie Vedder had security bring him back out and cut his hair on stage in front of everyone.

Song Notables:
Opening Track: Long Road
Closer:Fuckin' Up
Best Song: Alive - hearing that for the 1st time and entire crowd singing along.
1ST Time Songs: Everyone (1st Show)
Rare Tracks: All Those Yesterdays (15 Plays to date)
Daughter with a "I Want You To Want Me" tag
14. August 5, 2007 Chicago, IL (Lollapalooza)

Summery: A hot sweaty day with great music all to be capped off by Pearl Jam. 1st and only festival setting for the countdown. Kev got up early that morning and got a mohawk from a local barber.

Attendees: Kev, Forty, J.Evens, B.Evens, Emerson, Ryan, I know I'm forgetting a few, huge group.

Show Highlights: Forty corwdsurfing during Rearviewmirror. Eddie randomly on Dennis Rodman's shoulders during Keep on Rockin in a Free World. Fireworks over Chicago skyline during Given to Fly

Why this is at 14: Playlist was a greatest hits playlist. Shorter set than usual. The best song/act may have been from a band that played two sets earlier on the same stage (Kings Of Leon). The best moment with Eddie came during Kings performance. Great overall day, just not the best for a PJ show.

Song Notables:
Opener:Why Go
Closer: Rockin' in a Free World
Best Song: State Of Love and Trust
Rare Tracks: Education (7 plays)
No More (19 plays)
#13. September 3, 2011 Alpine Valley, East Troy, WI (PJ20 Night 1)

Summery: 20 Years of Pearl Jam all thrown into 1 blowout weekend. The pre-party thrown the night before was an amazing time. Met PJ fans from all over the world. The Hype for this show was massive. In fact, it was too massive. The day was a cold rainy day, not ideal for an outdoor show. The band tried to throw in a bunch of rarities and also worked to involve all the other artists who played earlier that day.

Reason this show ranks at 13: seats were a PJ Ten Club roped off section on the lawn. Still pretty far and the hill was extremely steep. I can bypass those things, but everything just didn't come together as expectations wished. Rain/Traffic/High Expectations

Attendees:Tim/Alison, Forty/Angela, Sarah, Mandy, Kev

Show Highlights: Dhani Harrison jamming with the band for State of Love and Trust. The son of one the greatest bands playing with the greatest band. Loved some of the rare songs on the playlist, but hated the songs that were scratched due to time. Cornell as a surprise guest doing Temple of the Dog.

Song Notables:
Opener: Release
Closer: Kick Out The Jams
Best Song: Deep, Release or Hunger Strike
Rarities: In The Moonlight (1st of 2 ever)
Help Help (10 Total)
Push Me Pull Me (12 total)
First Time For me: Deep, Faithful, In My Tree, All Temple songs
12. June 25, 2003 DTE Energy Music Theater, Clarkston, MI (Buzzcocks Opener)

Summery: PJ set to play back-back shows at DTE, but was leaving early the next morning to fly out to Disney to see Charlie. Band had some good energy that day, and jumped all over the place with the set list. VS. was the album of choice for that show though.

Attendees: Mandy

Show Highlights: Everything Eddie said. His comments still make this one of the most fun bootlegs for listening.

Why This Show is 12: Had to leave early the next morning. Mandy wasn't old enough to drink, and we didn't have a single drop of alcohol. Got there as soon as doors opened and still didn't get the best spot on the hill.

Song Notables:
Opening Track: Animal
Eddie Opener: The Kids Are Alright
Closer: Yellow Ledbetter
Best Song: Rearviewmirror -Still the best version, right as it got dark out too.
Rarities: Rival (20 total)
Help Help (10 Total)
11. July 19, 2013 Wrigley Field, Chicago, IL

Summery: This absolutely pains me for this concert to not break my top ten. Like PJ20, the expectations were set so high, even Pearl Jam would have trouble reaching them. Kev got things kicked off by nailing a spot at a bar near the stadium. Should have known something may have gone wrong that day as Kev was sharing a table with 2 buckeyes! Our entire group gathered and we prepared for the show. Kev and myself had general admission floor and were a good 15-20 people from the stage. However, 7 songs into the performance we were delayed do to storms in the area. I wrote this whole description once and had to redo the entire thing because it was 4 paragraphs long, so here is my shorten version. Let's end by saying Kev bailed on me and I was forced to share my most anticipated Pearl Jam moment by myself.

Attendees: Sarah, Kev, Ken, Mandy, Tim/Alison, Forty/Angela, Jeff,

Seats: General Admission Floor (Never was able to get up front because I was worried about where Kev had gone. Actually was pissed the whole show because I thought Kev fought his way to the front while I stayed back looking for him.)

Why this show ranks at 11: High expectations and a 3 hour weather delay. The delay killed the crowd atmosphere as everybody was tired from partying all day. The band was disappointing because the weather tried to spoil their big day, but they sure played their asses off for a three hour show. Being so close and having a fun day helped this one from slipping farther down.

Song Notables
Opener:Release
Closer Rockin in a Free World
Best Song: Release (Thought that was the beginning to what was gonna be the best show ever. Still in my top 5 live songs despite the show at 11.)
Rare Jams:
Hold On (3 total. I played this at the jukebox before the show, so this was bad ass to hear live for the first time.)
All Night 20
Lightning Bolt (Band's debut)
Bugs (3 times, just classic)
Mother 11
10. October 12, 2013 First Niagara Center, Buffalo, NY

Summery: Until the day before, I wasn't sure if I could make this one happen due to time and money. But we found a way. Thanks to Mandy for getting tickets. They went on sale while I was golfing. PJ Preparty was at a sweet bar in Buffalo. In fact, it was basically the only bar in Buffalo, so if you didn't get in early, you didn't get in at all.

Attendees: Sarah, Kev, Steve, Mandy, Ken

Seats: Side stage right (Boom) upper level very last row. Not the worst but Kev called us down as the 1st encore began and we got to sit right behind the stage lower level. Props to Kev.

Why this lands at 10: Kev may have bumped it up with the seat upgrade. Actually, my first show with the Lightning bolt album, so it was cool to hear those songs for the 1st time. Also, love the travel shows, always a fun time.

Show Highlights: Got in a fight with a stadium vender while buying a show poster. Eddie was easily top 3 most hammered for shows i'd seen. The band botched more songs that night then I had seen previously all together.

Song Notables:
Opener: Pendulum (Although they do it alot, just love this one being in the opener rotation)
Closer: Indifference (Always epic, but Eddie missed an entire verse messing up the crowd singalong)
Best Song: Go
Rarities:
Swallowed Whole (1st Time ever played) 7 Total
My Father's Son (1st time played) 4 total

9. September 4 2011, Alpine Valley, East Troy, WI (PJ20 Night 2)

Summery: Unlike day 1, this was a beautiful day, and not only did the band have a better idea what to except, but we the fans did too. Tailgate was fun, our seats were in the pavilion. The Strokes and Queens of the Stone Age were on.

Attendees: Sarah, Kev, Forty/Angela, Tim/Alison, Mandy

Seats: Stage right about 30 rows up inside the pavilion. (10 Club)

Why this lands at 9: If not for a 2nd straight set of Temple of The Dog, this could have landed in the top 5. Cornell was great, but that moment was for night 1, and killed the crowd momentum. Otherwise, long show, great set list and pavilion seats.

Show Highlights: Who can forget Mike running around the entire stage during Spin the Black Circle? Eddie Surprising Stone by playing No Way. Eddie wanted to play it, and Stone tried to differ to another song. www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwbUplfqX4E
Eddie told some great stories about the band's history that night.

Song Highlights:
Opener: Wash
Closer: Yellow Ledbetter
Best Song: Spin The Black Circle www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4caxqkjh4U
Rarities: All Night (21 Total)
Pilate (22 Total)
The New World (11)
No Way (11)
Public Image (6)
Hunger Strike w/Cornell

8. September 15, Copps Coliseum, Hamilton, ON

Summery: Pearl Jam was having trouble with their Ten Club presale. People attempting to get tickets for their Canadian tour were getting shut out after trying for almost a full day. It went so badly, they decided to go through ticketmaster for the Ten Club and start the process over again 2 days later. At this point I had no intention of going to this show. I had worked a Tigers afternoon game the day they went on sale again. The Tigers game was rained out early, so I was free to leave. However, I was also going to see the Arctic Monkeys later that evening at the Fillmore, so decided to stay and surf the web at work. It suddenly dawned on me the presale was about to restart and without thinking I went on and bought 2 tickets to Hamilton. The pre party was at a bar attached to the arena, and was a good time as usual. Post show the three of us went back to BK and to our hotel room. After passing out I woke up at 7am to drive back because I was going into work late only to find a missing Forty. He had escaped at 3am and drove all the way home.

Attendees: Forty, Kev

Seats: Stage right 20 yard line half way up.

Why this ranks at 8: Arena, distance, spontaneity and overall randomness gives this show a huge nod. Plus the drinks were flowing pretty good, and Eddie was top 2 all time rolled. And poutine fries!

Song Highlights- 30 Songs
Opener: Given to Fly (Side note 15 shows and I have seen 11 different song openers..) www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRrBOh3q-fA taken from my camera.
Closer: Yellow Ledbetter
Best Song: Brain of J
Favorite Immortality too
Rarities:
Search and Destroy (4 times)
Push me, Pull me (12 times)
July 16, 2013 Budweiser Gardens, London, ON

Summery: When putting together this list I would have picked this one to be higher, but this is where it lands. Another extremely difficult ticket to get ahold of. Ferg, Kev and I got selected to go to immigration on our way to the preparty and took over an hour at the Canadian border. By the time we arrived in London all the bars were already packed and we had to party at a small bar with no air condition. Did I mention it was the hottest week of 2013. For some reason I couldn't get into a drinking groove until the show actually started. Tim and Forty met us at the bar before the show.

Attendees: Tim, Forty, Ferg and Kev

Seats: Stage right behind the stage on Boom's side. About 10 rows up. Actually, our seats were in a club area where the beers were being served 1 row behind us without having to leave the arena. 1st show to use the new lighting stage setup.

Why this show at 7: Instant classic. The band had to work out some kinks before what was thought to be their big show at Wrigley. This ended up paying off in the bands favor as they blew the roof off with one of my favorite set lists. Got to experience my first PJ show with Ferg. The reasons it missed out on the top 5 mostly had to do with the experience as a whole. We had to drive back and work the next morning. We had to work the day of the show and got stuck at the border. Didn't feel well at the bar.

Song Highlights:
Opener: Present Tense - Great opener but they had some lights up that blocked our view for that one song.
Closer- Indifference
Favorite Song: Alone
Rarities: Mind Your Manners (1st Time Ever Played)
Parachutes (20 Total)
London Calling Improv

*Thanks to Tim for waiting in line for the posters

June 22, 2008 Verizon Center Washington, DC

Summery: A short east coast tour was all 08 was bringing to us. After making a decision not to travel, Mark decided to just buy 2 tickets to DC. With some quick planning and not much convincing, we assembled a nice little crew for the nations capitol. This was our first experience of a ten club pre party, and to this day still the smallest one I have attended, loved it though. Had many drinks and that did not stop at the preparty.

Attendees: Mark, Steve, Kev, Paul

Seats: Stage right, right next to the stage, 1st row upper level (Stones side). Doesnt seem far but the stadium was very steep, so it seemed pretty far. Paul had a couple seats open about half way through, so Kev and I went down what seemed to be a fleet of a thousand stairs to upgrade directly behind the stage 10 rows up.

Why this is 6: Nothing beats a good road trip. Obviously a good show needs to follow, but the whole experience of driving out to DC with my brother and having a few days in DC, couple that with a Nationals game, all helped make the PJ experience top 6 quality. The seat upgrade also helped a lot. This prob lands #6 as far as myself jumping during a show.

Songs:
Opener: Hard To Imagine
Closer: Yellow Ledbetter
Best song: Evenflow (Normally not super excited but the entire band crushed it)
Rarities: I'm Open (9 total)
U (21)
No More (19)
All Along the Watchtower (11)
5. June 24, 2006 US Bank Arena, Cincinnati, OH (Robert Pollard Opener)

Summery: The first of the great '06 tour to make the countdown. The city was buzzing because the last time the band was scheduled to play Cincy, the arena was flooded I believe. I drove solo to Kev's parents house early that morning. Kev and I drank multiple drinks and swam in their pool throughout the entire day. When the others arrived, it was time to jam.

Attendees: Kev, Steve, Luke, Mark, Alex, Al?

Seats: Stage right about 5 rows deep upper level 1st row. Smaller arena, didn't feel that far.

Why this at 5: The day itself was going great before the show started. This would be in my top 3 shows as far as crowd energy, as well as band energy. In fact, this would be the #1 show for hardest I've seen PJ play throughout an entire night. We wondered if they would ever slow down. This may have been the most I had to drink before a show. Post show I had the task of giving The Dabee directions on the phone on how to exit Cincinnati and what a horrible idea that was. I kept saying "It's Fine" and The Dabee kept getting more ticked. To my credit he probably deserved it after years of never taking me serious.

Song Notables:
Opener: Long Road
Closer: Baba O'Riley
Eddie Pre Opener: The Kids Are Alright
Best Song: Betterman (Long time coming for me)
Other favorites: Leash and Present Tense (Those songs have been in my top 25 since)
Rarities: Don't think we had any, but Lukin/Whipping Green Disease/Not For You were very good song combos.

Luke's sister still has my batteries.
May 22, 2006 The Palace Of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, MI (My Morning Jacket Opener)

Summery: When I moved to Central Michigan I had to live with 3 other guys I hadn't met. The guy I shared a room with was Luke (The Dabee). 2 Days in I noticed he was listening to No Code. May 22, 2006 we attended our first PJ concert together. 1st Time tailgating at a PJ show. Didn't drink that much, and just sat in our car.

Seats: Stage right next to the stage (Stone) 1st level about 20 rows up.

Attendees: Mandy, Luke, Steere

Why Number 4: The set list, my constant jumping, State of Love and Trust with The Dabee, Jeremy with Steere, and Nothingman with Mandy are all great reasons.

Show Highlights:
The set list's alone for the final 4 shows could have put each of them in the final four. Auburn Hills 06, happened to be the last time Pearl Jam played the state of Michigan. Ed talked about how Stone messed up Small Town the other night in GR and he messed up the lyrics during this show. Next song was Nothingman and they botched and had to redo that one too.
Opener: Long Road
Closer: Yellow Ledbetter
Best Song: State Of Love and Trust
Other Good Songs: In Hiding, Man Of The Hour, Insignificance and Garden. This also gave me my first taste of the crowd singing along to Indifference. Great Set
Rarities: Kick Out the Jams (25)
3. May 19, 2006 Van Andel Arena Grand Rapids, MI (My Morning Jacket Opener)

Summery: Before texting and facebook there was a tool of communication that the youngsters used. AOL Instant Messenger was that tool that kept all your friends and people who pretended to be your friends intact While in college there was nothing better than a great "Away Message". Tickets for the '06 tour went on sale and after getting Auburn Hills locked up I heard the AIM noise and Baller444 came on with a message. Just picked up 2 tickets to GR, wanna go? Now, Forty and I had known each other for a long time, I had even earned the nickname "Buyer" from attending Fortyfests in the past. But, we always hung out in group settings, so a road trip with a group member could lead to some awkward moments. It only took five minutes into the road trip for the awkwardness to begin as this guy tried to shove the opening band My Morning Jacket down my neck. Then proceeded to tell me he would call Vince Canova from 89x and just shoot the shit about new music. Little did I know that the next 5 years of my life would be attending multiple amazing concerts with him. I will save this love fest for another time, We arrived in GR and had our pregame at the BOB. My first pre-drinking for Pearl Jam.

Attendees: Forty

Seats Center stage about 15 rows behind the floor seats.

Why this show is 3: The set list, The Pistons game 6, Grand Rapids, The energy that Forty and I had for Comotose. The fact that Eddie experimented with an acoustic set including Off He Goes, Hard to Imagine, Around The Bend, Parting Ways and Slight of Hand.

Song Notables:
Opener: Small Town
Closer: Yellow Ledbetter
Eddie Preset: Dead Man, Can't Explain
Best Song: Baba O Riley
Other great songs: Blood, Satan's Bed, Comotose, and Off He Goes.
Rarities:
Around The Bend (10)
Parting Ways (23)

2. May 20, 2010 Madison Square Garden New York, NY (Black Keys Opener)

Summery: I know a few of you are surprised that this is not number 1. Honestly, up until the past few days, it may have edged out the new champ, but the overall experience/show puts this at a very close #2. We left at 10pm May 19th for our 10 hour trip to the big apple. Drove through the night and arrived in the city with about 6 hours until show time. The preparty was across from the Garden and as usual was a packed house. Kev made his way to the bar and bought 5 Long Islands and the tab was around $60 (Strongest drink at a bar ever). Walking into the Garden had the vibe that can only be explained by actually experiencing it yourself. Kind of magical, and the rest of the evening followed it up. The set list was great.

Attendees: Mandy, Sarah, Kev and Luke

Seats: About mid court 20 rows up, stage right (Stone's side)

Why this is #2: The reason is because somehow another show was better. The crowd was the best crowd for any concert I have ever attended. Every person in the building knew the words to every song. There is no question the band fed of all the energy.

Song Notables:
Opener: Sometimes
Closer: Indifference (May be single best moment for any concert i've attended)
Best Song: Indifference and a surprising Do The Evolution right behind it. Ive seen that song more than any, and going into the show it was the one song I told Kev, I could go without. They just killed it that night.
Sometimes- You knew Ed was building off the early energy as he nearly blew up toward the end of the slow jam.
Leash- Feel free to play this at every show boys.
Unthought Known- My 1st time hearing it.
Love Reign O'er Me- Boom all over it.
Rarities:
Force Of Nature (11)
1. May 21, 2010 Madison Square Garden New York, NY (Band Of Horses Opener)

Summery: And AWAY WE GO! Like the previous night the energy was the same. The day started with a little sight seeing with Sarah and Mandy, but as the show got closer, I grew more eager and wanted to party with Kev and Luke, thus leaving the girls and the Statue of Liberty. Went back to the hotel and played a quick game of edward something hands. This trio continued as Mandy agreed to swap seats with me so I could sit with the trio. 1st and only time the three of us have sat together for Pearl Jam.

Seats: Stage left a little behind the stage (Mike's side)

Attendees: Mandy, Sarah, Kev and Luke

Why is this is #1: for all the same reasons the other show was #2. Mix that with the Kev/Luke trio, the set list, and the band knowing it was the last show on the tour. If you don't already get the bootlegs for these 2 shows. Eddie tells some great stories and you can actually hear the crowd during every song.

Song Notables
Opener: Corduroy
Closer: Yellow Ledbetter
Best Song: Given To Fly - This song came after a few rare jams and people were ready to explode when this played. I'll never forget the chorus and how I got chills as everyone was jumping around.
Other great songs;
Wasted Reprise into Betterman- Eddie actually was holding back tears
Lukin- With a string quartet they played this as a slow jam.
Spin The Black Circle
Hunger Strike with Ben from BOH
Rarities:
Black Red Yellow (5)
Sweet Lew (2) Eddie dribbling and Jeff singing
Push Me, Pull Me (12)
I'm Open (9)
