The Endless Summer (1968)
This is probably the first surf movie I ever watched. It is a classic.
marcuscthomas's rating:
Gidget is not a traditional beach party per se. There is no musical interludes and no zany character. But, the girls do go to the beach to "hunt" men, there is a " luau" and there are a bunch of beach bums living on the beach for the Summer to surf and look at the sights. So, it qualifies as the first, and best, beach party movie.
marcuscthomas's rating:
Again, this is not a musical, but it qualifies as a beach party movie for the same reason as Gidget. It is close to being the best. These two stand far above the rest. Zany character - Basil (Frank Gorshin).
marcuscthomas's rating:
Palm Springs Weekend (1963)
This movie doesn't even take place on a beach, but it qualifies nonetheless due to its content. It has singing, parties, and implied sex in the beach-like setting of Palm Springs, CA. Zany character - Biff Roberts (Jerry Van Dyke). So, how is it justified on this list? Well, it was developed to compete with the beach party comedies of the day, and it is far better than any of the "beach party" series of movies.
marcuscthomas's rating:
No Annette and Frankie! No Elvis! Simply a list of "beach/surf" movies unranked. This is a mix of serious drama films, documentary surfing films, and sappy teenage sex comedies. [Note: also not considered for this list are other good movies that don't fit exactly into the "beach/surf" theme: Jaws, Summer Rental, Forgetting Sarah Marshal, Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation, etc.]
