The Raid 2 (2014)
This is exactly how all action movies should be filmed. None of that awful fast cutting crap. Real martial art skills. Every fight more epic than the last.
Film Ninja's rating:

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Better than most of the endlessly celebrated Star Wars movies.
Film Ninja's rating:

The other major gimmick film of the year. Checking in on the boy during his childhood is fascinating, not so much once he grows up. Not quite good enough, but almost long enough, to be called the American Apu Trilogy.
Film Ninja's rating:

Interstellar (2014)
I know Nolan fills his films with endless rambling scientific explanations that will ruin repeat viewings, but they sure are good the first time you watch them.
Film Ninja's rating:

Godzilla (2014)
I admire Godzilla for aiming higher than just a mindless monster disaster movie like those Jurassic sequels. You don't exactly end up caring about the main human characters, but the attempt was there. The actual title monster was done perfectly IMO.
Film Ninja's rating:

The Dead Lands (2014)
This has to be one of the most unique action movies ever made. The stone age weapons, the Maori fighting styles, the amazing landscapes and the alien culture (alien to most of the world). You'll never see anything like this.
Film Ninja's rating:

Two Days, One Night (2014)
Those Dardenne brothers are as consistent as it gets in modern cinema. Their films are Neorealist portraits of our modern world.
Film Ninja's rating:

American Sniper (2014)
The big war of our times is finally given the good old John Wayne action movie treatment. But unlike in those old WWII propaganda movies, this hero comes back from war with some major issues. There's a saying that it's always more interesting to print the legend.
Film Ninja's rating:

Too Many Cooks (2014)
Is this parody? Is it horror? Is it surrealism? I think the answer is always yes.
Film Ninja's rating:

Even though I can see why people despise the film, I am in the camp that really likes it. Put aside the technical gimmicks and great actors, I actually thought it was an interesting character study.
Film Ninja's rating:

Top what? I decided to list all the 9 and 10 star rated movies (based on my own ratings) of each year instead of trying to make a list of exactly 10. Some years may have 1 and some may have 20 in the list. It depends on the amount of good movies I saw from that year - but even more it hopefully reflects the amount of decent movies that were actually made in a particular year.
I have included a small explanation for people who may not have heard of the film.
Lists will constantly change as I see more films.
