The most glorious years of ancient Rome generally coincide with the end of the 1st century and the middle of the 2nd century (approximately 70-180 AD). This period encompasses the Flavian Dynasty (Vespasian, Titus, Domitian) and the subsequent Five Good Emperors (Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius). This period is considered the peak of the Roman Empire's military, architectural, economic, and cultural power.

The year 80 AD, when the Colosseum opened, was one of Rome's most populous and glorious periods. At that time, the city's population was approximately 1 million (some estimates range from 750,000 to 1,200,000), making it the largest city in the ancient world. This population level was not seen in any European city until the 19th century.

It is generally accepted that the city of Rome reached its most populous and glorious period between 100-200 AD.
