A native Houstonian, Lassiter graduated from Strake Jesuit High School, Southern Methodist University B.A. History, and The University of Tulsa School of Law, JD. In 1981 Lassiter was recruited out of high school by Ron Myer to play tight end for SMU. He then began working in the legal field in 1984 and after obtaining his law degree he practiced for ten years as a trial and appellate attorney in South Texas.
