Viard was educated at the Lycée Pierre Corneille in Rouen.[2]

Viard has won three César Awards. The first in 2000 for Best Actress for her role in Haut les cœurs!, the second in 2003 for Best Supporting Actress for Embrassez qui vous voudrez and the third in 2019, in the same category for Little Tickles. Overall, she has been nominated for the César Awards 13 times.

Viard has also won the Best Actress award at the Montréal World Film Festival for her performance in Le Rôle de sa vie.

Personal life
From 1992 to 2017, Karin Viard lived with Laurent Machuel, director of photography, cameraman and sound engineer; together they had two daughters, Marguerite (1998) and Simone (2000).[3][4]

Après une scolarité au lycée Corneille de Rouen, Karin Viard, fille d'un directeur de plate-forme pétrolière, passe deux années au conservatoire de la ville, puis gagne Paris où elle suit les cours de comédie de Vera Gregh et de Blanche Salant. Elle tourne dans quelques téléfilms, puis dans des films à succès dans les années 1990 tels que Tatie Danielle d'Étienne Chatiliez, Delicatessen de Marc Caro et Jean-Pierre Jeunet et Les Randonneurs de Philippe Harel. Elle a obtenu le César de la meilleure actrice en 2000 pour son rôle de femme enceinte atteinte d'un cancer dans Haut les cœurs ! de Solveig Anspach, puis celui du meilleur second rôle, trois ans plus tard, pour Embrassez qui vous voudrez de Michel Blanc.
