An American folk, country and bluegrass composer and musician known for his mastery of the fiddle and banjo, as well as for his witty lyrics, unique vocal style and extensive knowledge of Mississippi River lore.
Later in his career, he recorded and toured with his son, Jamie and with various incarnations of the John Hartford String Band.
In 2001, he was awarded a Grammy award for his contribution to the soundtrack of "O Brother Where Art Thou".
