Description:
Jo-Carroll Dennison became the first Texan to take the title of Miss America in 1942.
As she was Miss America during World War II, much of her time as Miss America was spent visiting "defense plants, hospitals and service camps" and selling war bonds. After her time as Miss America, she went to Hollywood and had roles in Winged Victory and The Jolson Story. She later married comedian Phil Silvers and with whom she had five daughters.
