Came from a family of magicians, his father being the famous British conjurer John Nevil Maskelyne (1839-1917). During World War II, he volunteered for the Royal Engineers, rose to the rank of major and was influential in designing camouflage for AFV's, ships and ordnance. After the war, he bought a farm in Kenya, became a police officer and fought against Mau Mau terrorists.
