Jane Sprague, a Californian whose life was knocked off course — as were the lives of an entire generation — by war. In 1943, she put her college studies on hold to work as an aircraft factory dispatcher in Tuscon; a year later, just after her 20th birthday, she signed up to the Women’s Auxiliary Corps. After a six-month posting in England, she was sent to Paris, where she was stationed at Orly with Air Transport Command. And one day, while off-duty, she wandered into Lucien Lelong’s salon on the Avenue Matignon, and was hired on the spot to model for the designer out of hours.
