He released his second album, Songs for You, Truths for Me in 2008, which entered the top five in the UK as well as topping the Irish Albums Chart. Songs for You, Truths for Me featured the top ten singles "You Make It Real" and his critically acclaimed collaboration with Nelly Furtado titled "Broken Strings". He has performed with Jason Mraz, Nelly Furtado, and others in concerts and in songs. When James Morrison was in New Zealand, and appeared on the New Zealand Idol show, the two finalists asked Morrison about the meaning behind the song "You Give Me Something", and Morrison said that it was intended to be a 'harsh love song', and the lyrics mean that the protagonist of the song does not love the person as much as she loves him, but is willing to give the relationship a try.
Morrison later promoted the album in the US.
The song "Better Man" was played in an episode of the American TV show What About Brian, and also in an episode of Grey's Anatomy. The song "You Give Me Something" appeared in an episode of Ugly Betty, an episode of Doctor Who, and a promo for FX. The song "This Boy" appeared in an episode of the CW show One Tree Hill (Series 4, Episode 17).
American Idol contestant Von Smith auditioned with the song "If the Rain Must Fall," with negative feedback.
Songs for You, Truths for Me is the second album by English singer, songwriter and guitarist James Morrison, released on 29 September 2008. The album was a commercial success in the UK where it entered the album charts at number three and in Ireland where it topped the charts. It has been certified double Platinum by the BPI with over 700,000 sales and has sold more than 1 million of copies worldwide.
On 29 September 2008, Morrison's first album entitled Songs for You, Truths for Me was released. In the writing process for this album he worked with Ryan Tedder, Martin Terefe, Martin Brammer, Chris Braide and Steve Robson. The album also features a duet with Nelly Furtado entitled "Broken Strings", co-written with Fraser T. Smith and Nina Woodford. From October 2008 until the end of the year Morrison has toured throughout Europe. When talking about the album at 4Music Presents, Morrison stated that the music had 'moved on' a lot from the first album but that not to the point where fans of his previous album wouldn't be able to 'get it'.
The album was re-released on 16 November 2009, featuring two brand new tracks: "On the Same Side" and "Get to You" (which was the first single of the re-issue of the album and was released on the same day) and a second disc, The Basement Sessions, with acoustic versions of six of his own songs and a Michael Jackson cover "Man in the Mirror".
The Awakening Released: 26 September 2011.
James has been working on his third Studio Album recently, which he hopes for it to be released in Spring 2011. In a June 2010 interview he stated "I've sung too many love ballads. I want to go a bit deeper than that and find more substance. I still don't feel confident enough to write by myself, but that is my aim. I just keep convincing myself that I'm not good enough. There are plenty of good singers out there - it's writing that's the key thing. When I'm working with other people I've heard them say 'Let's try to write a James Morrison chorus.' I want to pretend that I haven't made any albums at all and start afresh." James Morrison has worked with Kara Dioguardi and Toby Gad for this album.
He announced one of the tracks on the album might be called "The Awakening" saying, "I want to write about this idea of an awakening of some kind. Iโve written a song with that title, which Iโm really happy with. Thereโs some funky digeridoo going on".
In May he stated on his Facebook page that he had almost finished his album and would be releasing it very soon. A song called "Forever" should be the potential first single from the new album.
On July 11, he stated on his Twitter that the new album is called "The Awakening" and is due to release on September 26.
