He comes from Hradové Střimelice and is a graduate of the Mechanical Engineering School in Kolín. In 1975, he founded his first band with his classmate Luboš Trnka, which they called Travaléři. Between 1978 and 1980, he completed his military service in České Budějovice. During his military service, he founded the Horizont dance and brass band, and together with this band he won many awards. After his military service, he studied at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory in Prague in 1982–1985. During this time, he worked in the rock bands Rockyt and Kroket. Between 1978 and 1980, he completed his military service in České Budějovice. During his military service, he founded the Horizont dance and brass band, and together with this band he won many awards. After his military service, he studied at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory in Prague in 1982–1985. During this time, he worked in the rock bands Rockyt and Kroket. In 1986, he began working with Lucie Bílá and Petr Hannig's Maximum band. And it was producer Petr Hannig who discovered Smolík, and he is also the originator of his stage name Jakub – his original name was Jaroslav after his father (he was forced to change it). During this period, he sang the hit Až se ti jednou bude zdát, which was first heard on the show Pozor, začínáme.
In the following year, 1987, he collaborated with singers Marta Strava and Martina Formanova. He also performed with Lukáš Vaculík, Miroslav Moravec and Dagmar Veškrnová.
In 1988–1989, he toured sixty concerts throughout the Soviet Union. In 1992, he released a promotional album with his friend Franta Kasl (Briami) entitled Až se ti jednou bude zdát. In that year, he released the CD Největší hity country zpívá Jakub Smolík (The Greatest Country Songs) with Jiří Zmožek's Carmen company, and the success of this CD was followed in 1992 by the CD Největší hity country 2. In 1992, his first daughter, Nikola, was born. He shot video clips for the songs Prý chlapi nebrečí and Ave Maria. He performed on the concert tour with Jiří Zmožek and Radoslav Brzobohatý.
In 1993, he recorded two albums with actress, singer and presenter Šárka Tomanová. In 1995, he shot a video for the text of Vítězslav Nezval About the countless beauties of the body. Another video clip, Víš, was made in 1996, starring Petra Voláková.
In 1997, his second daughter Karolína was born, who currently lives in Zlín, where she was born.
Between 1996 and 1998, he collaborated with Michal David on children's projects Písničky Ferdy mravence, Štědrý večer s panom Ladou and Méďa Béďa a jeho přátelé. In 1998, he shot two more video clips - Živá láska (with Eva Vejmělková) and the successful hit Má Jenny.
In 2000, he collaborated with Petr Janda and Aleš Brichta, together they sang the song and shot the video clip Každej si meleme svou. He also began performing at live concerts with the group Zlatí paroháči. In mid-September 2002, he flew to the USA, where he took part in a motorcycle ride along the famous Route 66. In 2003, a concert at the Branický Theatre in Prague was sold out, twice in one day. In mid-December, he was named the Czech Nightingale's Jumper of the Year in a poll. At a concert in Lucerna on November 9, 2005, where guests included Lenka Filipová, Wabi Daněk, Bohouš Josef, Martin Maxa, Josef Vojtek, Gábina Goldová and others, he received a gold disc for the CD Chci ti říct.
