The Mets selected him in the ninth round of the 2010 MLB draft, and he made his major league debut with the Mets on May 15, 2014. In the same year, deGrom was named the National League's Rookie of the Month twice, and the NL Rookie of the Year. In 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2021 deGrom was selected as an MLB All-Star. In 2018, deGrom was the NL leader in earned run average and won the Cy Young Award. In 2019, he led the NL in strikeouts and won the Cy Young Award for the second year in a row. In 2020, he again led the National League in strikeouts.
After the shortened season in 2020 (due to the COVID pandemic), deGrom pitched only 92 innings in 2021 before being shut down for the year on July 18 with inflammation in his elbow.
DeGrom suffered a stress reaction, the precursor to a stress fracture in his right scapula during spring training, an injury which caused him to miss the beginning of the 2022 seasonโhe debuted in August.
Following the end of the season, deGrom opted out of his contract, joining a group of several other Mets entering free agency.
On December 2, 2022, deGrom signed a five-year, $185 million contract with the Texas Rangers. He made 6 starts for Texas in 2023, posting a 2.67 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 30+1โ3 innings pitched. On June 6, 2023, the Rangers announced that deGrom would require Tommy John surgery after suffering a torn UCL in his right elbow. He first had Tommy John surgery in 2011 while in the minor leagues.
deGrom pitched just 254 innings in his last 4 seasons due to the combined factors previously mentioned.
