Born in the province of Piacenza, she spent her childhood between her family village and Gropparello. She has a sister two years older, Fausta, and a younger brother, Alessandro. In 1974 she moved to Piacenza with her family. At the age of 15 she won the Miss Teenager contest between the evening games at the Farnesiana, a district of Piacenza, and as a prize she got a record contract with the Italian WEA which made her record a 45 rpm. Soon, however, she will take another path.

In 1981 he made his television debut with a small part in the program Sotto le stelle by Gianni Boncompagni and then he took part in the children's program 3, 2, 1... contact! whose theme song, entitled Canto Una Canzone, is recorded on 45 rpm.

During Sotto le stelle she was noticed by the director Carlo Vanzina, and in 1983 she played the role of Selvaggia in Sapore di mare, her first film. At the age of 18 she settled in Rome and definitively began her career as an actress, alternating film appearances with theatrical performances.

After a first phase of her career in which she took part in many cult comedies of the eighties (Il Ras del quartiere, Sapore di mare, Sapore di mare 2 - Un anno dopo, Tomorrow I'm getting married, Giochi d'estate, Chewingum, Dagobert, Fracchia contro Dracula, The boy of the Pony Express), she begins to try her hand at a more busy cinema when, in 1988, she is chosen by Marco Tullio Giordana for Appointment in Liverpool, where she plays a desperate girl ready to kill the hooligan who killed her father. In 1989 she starred in Willy Signori and came from afar; while in 1994 it was the turn of Cronaca di un amore violazione by Giacomo Battiato.

In 1995, at the Venice Film Festival, she won the Coppa Volpi for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Ettore Scola's Romanzo di un giovane povero with Alberto Sordi. In 2000 and 2001 she played the part of Commissioner Giovanna Scalise in the first two seasons of the television series Distretto di polizia (Mediaset), directed by Renato De Maria (who will become her husband) and the second by Antonello Grimaldi. In 2005 she starred in the films Amatemi by Renato De Maria and Arrivederci amore, ciao by Michele Soavi.

Among the other Italian films she has starred in are: Vite sospese by Marco Turco; La lingua del santo by Carlo Mazzacurati; Il seme della discordia by Pappi Corsicato; Saturno contro and Un giorno perfetto by Ferzan Özpetek; Caos calmo by Antonello Grimaldi (with Nanni Moretti); Due partite by Enzo Monteleone. He also took part in Woody Allen's film To Rome with Love, with a small cameo. In 2010 he is again on television in the fiction of Canale 5 Nel bianco. In 2009 she starred in the TV film Storia di Laura (Rai 1) by Andrea Porporati, which was broadcast in 2011.

In the period 2011-2012 she was testimonial of Yamamay's TV commercial directed by Paolo Sorrentino on the notes of Per un'ora d'amore by Matia Bazar rearranged by Subsonica. She participated in the International Rome Film Festival 2012 with E la chiamano estate, directed by Paolo Franchi and won the Marc'Aurelio d'Argento award for best actress. In 2013 she is again directed by Paolo Sorrentino in La grande bellezza.

He had his first success in the theatre in 2006 with Due partite by Cristina Comencini. He then staged with Ennio Fantastichini Il catalogo by Jean-Claude Carrière, directed by Valerio Binasco and participated in the civil engagement recital Total Anesthesia by and with Marco Travaglio, directed by Stefania De Santis. Since January 2013, together with Marco Travaglio, he has been on stage in Italian theatres with the show È stato la Mafia (It was the Mafia), focused on the events of the negotiations that involved the Corleonians and men of State.

At the age of 16 she had an affair with 48-year-old Gianni Boncompagni. She married in April 2002 at the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Abbadia di Naro (PU) with the director Renato De Maria, with whom she had two children: Nina and Giovanni.
