Irwin Shaw was an American playwright, screenwriter, novelist, and short-story author whose written works have sold more than 14 million copies. He is best known for two of his novels: "The Young Lions" (1948) and "Rich Man, Poor Man" (1970). Unable to be commissioned as an officer due to his age and 1-A draft status, Shaw enlisted in the Army during World War II, serving in director George Stevens' film unit. He was one of four writers attached to Stevens' command, in which he became a warrant officer.
