Hiram Percy Maxim

Hiram Percy Maxim was an American inventor, a radio enthusiast, a car racer, an entrepreneur, and a writer. He created a sound suppressor for firearms (he called it a silencer, so both of these terms are correct), a muffler for internal combustion engines, and the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). He was the son of Hiram Stevens Maxim — the creator of the Maxim machine gun.
