He began his career in endurance racing, achieving notable success by winning the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside Gijs van Lennep in a Porsche 917K. Marko also competed in Formula One between 1971 and 1972, driving for teams like BRM and Bonnier. His F1 career was tragically cut short when a piece of debris struck his helmet during the 1972 French Grand Prix, leaving him blind in one eye and forcing an early retirement from racing.
