Udy was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the daughter of Mya, a former military officer, and John Udy, a city planner and university professor. She is the sister of Claudia Udy. She was raised in Montreal, Canada. Udy began her career as a child actor in Canadian television shows. After studying at Montreal`s Dome Theater school and pursued a degree in film communications at Montreal`s Dawson College while continuing her acting career in Canadian movies before moving to New York for a 1983 stint on the soap opera As the World Turns. She is known among Star Trek fans for playing Pel in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode Rules
