Raised in a world of speed and competition, Harry inherited both the passion and pedigree for racing. Before his motorsport career took off, he served in the Finnish Air Force during the Winter War and later in the U.S. Tank Corps during World War II. After the war, he returned to Europe and began racing Coopers in Formula 3 and Formula 2, eventually making his Formula One debut at the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix—the first American to start a Formula One Grand Prix.
Over the next decade, Schell competed in 57 Formula One World Championship races, driving for teams like Maserati, Ferrari, Vanwall, and BRM. Though he never won a Grand Prix, he earned two podium finishes and scored 32 championship points. Known for his charisma, stylish demeanor, and fearless driving, Schell was a beloved figure in the paddock. Tragically, his career was cut short when he died in a crash during practice for the 1960 BRDC International Trophy at Silverstone. Despite being somewhat forgotten in modern motorsport lore, Schell remains a significant figure in the early history of American drivers in Formula One.
