Skelly spent his early years in Davenport, Iowa and left home left home at the age of 15 to join a circus.
Aged 17 he decided to go into comedy and toured with a light opera company in China and Japan.
He became a veteran of medicine shows, musical comedy, burlesque and Lew Dockstader's Minstrels. His eccentric dancing ability earned him the nickname "Tumbling Harold Skelly".
