Image Quality

BradWesley123 7 years, 1 month ago at Mar 30 5:07 -
The image quality on every posted photo I look at has been downgraded, both when they are full-sized and condensed. There appears to be problems with pixels; images appear overly-blurry.

If they were png images they are now being converted to jpg since serving images has become really expensive especially uncompessed png's. If you can list some specific examples I check look into it more

I just noticed this as well. Images were blurry no matter what the original quality was. It could be intermittent depending on server resources since images uploaded this morning were fine. I'll try again later and see what happens...

I'm not sure, but it seems that if the background is white, the quality degrades. I analyzed all my images uploaded, and it seems to be the case. This might be tied to the duplicate image processing and it detects it as an outlier which would then change the quality? I don't know, just a theory...

Can you post a specific example so I can compare with the old image server?

Did you upload this URL: images2.imagebam.com/0d/4d/26/6973ab810713373.jpg ? or copy image and paste - sometimes I've done that by accident and it posts a smaller, preview pic.

Nevermind - it is definitely compressing the image. And they are both JPG's too.

I've changed it to improve the quality

I tested it by uploading more, images doesn't seem improved, still looks blurry.

There seems to be a correlation with how bright or dark the pics are. These are a few examples of the same type of images:

good quality, pic has darker tones

blurry, pic has mostly light tones/white

original

as you can see, the image with darker tones is barely unchanged, white the lighter image is noticeably blurry.

The quality issues should be fixed now
BradWesley123 7 years ago at Apr 11 4:41 -
They're certainly better, though the images still aren't 100% fixed.

Still pretty rough.

Please can you post specific examples that look worse than they did before so I can look into it further

I noticed the following:

The images are displayed in black and white and sometimes green before they are full.

Are they progressive JPEGs?
