Gerolamo Cardano was an Italian polymath of the Renaissance. He was born in Pavia, Lombardy. He graduated from the University of Padua with a doctorate in medicine. He is most famous for being a talented mathematician and a physician. His other interests were astrology, astronomy, biology, chemistry, philosophy, physics, and writing.
He invented the Cardan gear and made contributions (not invented) to hypocycloids, the binomial coefficients, the binomial theorem, imaginary numbers, negative numbers, the gimbal, and the combination lock. Contrary to popular belief, he didn't invent the universal joint. One of his famous books

The Inquisition arrested him after an accusation of heresy. He was released afted he had renounced his beliefs. His non-medical books were banned. Later he worked for Pope Pius V and Pope Gregory XIII as a personal doctor, and was accepted into the Royal College of Physicians of London.
