Finally! A Tonka program that lets kids race- and crash- their vehicles! Our testers' favorite activity was the car racing simulation. First kids pick their vehicle from over 30 wild and crazy choices. Then they pick their vehicle and opponent. Next, kids choose from four tracks, jungle, rural, tundra or desert, or they can even design and build their own track. First kids pick their vehicle from over 30 wild and crazy choices. Then they pick their vehicle and opponent. Next, kids choose from four tracks, jungle, rural, tundra or desert, or they can even design and build their own track. When the race begins, players use the keyboard to steer and accelerate, winning or crashing as the case may be! It's lots of fun, and the many racing options keep kids coming back for more. In other areas of the program, children can upgrade their vehicles by exchanging racing points for souped up car parts. They can visit the press box, where trophies are kept and where newspaper clippings and awards can be printed out. The software also works in conjunction with another Tonka program, Tonka Garage, enabling kids to race the vehicles they created in the Garage on the Raceway. Our test kids, boys and girls alike, loved the program and returned to it many times. The section that allows children to create their own race tracks is particularly good- an excellent opportunity for planning and critical thinking. Another nice feature is the Tonka cast- there are 24 characters to interact with, adding to the depth of the program. Complaints were few. Parents should be on hand to help younger kids through the program, especially the track creation portion.
