It's not that there is a shortage of golf games on the App Store right now that makes Tiger Woods such a winner. Gameloft's recent Let's Golf is an excellent option for armchair golf fans that want a casual clicker. Tiger Woods takes nothing away from it; if you like Hot Shots-style golf, then that is the game for you. But if you fancy a real-deal sim, then Tiger Woods should be your next download. It's worth every penny of its $9.99 price tag.
At the start of the game, you create your very own golfer from a competent character generator. Once you have your model (which never quite looks as good as the virtual Tiger, by the way), you can either practice your shot or jump right into the extensive tournament schedule. As you work your way up the ranks of the tournament, you travel the world and see some the golf courses frequented by the pros, such as Pebble Beach and St. Andrews. Getting to the top and challenging the likes of Tiger is not going to be easy. This is not the world's most forgiving golf game. You must put in effort to get your digital duffer to the most of his game. Part of the effort comes from practice with the controls.
Tiger Woods PGA Tour does not use an arced swing meter like other golf games -- including previous iterations of this franchise. Instead, after choosing a club and directing your shot, you must run your finger down a Fuji-shaped control input. Pulling your finger down the meter sets the power of the shot; pushing your finger back up sets the accuracy. The last half of that equation is where you can get into trouble. It will take you at least five or six tries (likely more) to train yourself to draw that straight line back up the meter. Slight deviations in the path of your finger will hook a shot. Completely blowing it will doubtlessly put your ball out of bounds. Once your shot is in the air, swiping the screen serves to put a little english on the ball.
