Army Men: Operation Meltdown - PC Games

You command a squad of men around the terrain trying to achieve various military objectives: blowing up radar stations, securing a beach-head, repelling the Tan forces back as you fight for the might of the Green army. Most of your soldiers start life as lowly infantry riflemen but can pick up grenades, mortars, sniper rifles and other equipment as the game develops.

The only criticism of Army Men would be the control side of things. You can appoint your men to platoons, but they can easily lose their affiliation with one incorrect button press. When sending some troops from one place to another, you might find them shuffling about at the bottom of a cliff, which does tend to get frustrating.

It is entertaining to call in an air strike on an advancing enemy platoon and watching their mutilated bodies scatter across the ground, or melting them into pools of plastic, but this enjoyment is marred by the frustration of the controls. Army Men is an original idea with an impressive array of gameplay and mutliplayer options, but unfortunately the game doesn't fulfil it's potential. --Chris Hall
