Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie first met in high school in Suffolk County, New York. Petito graduated from Bayport-Blue Point High School in 2017 and lived in Blue Point, New York, before moving in with Laundrie's parents in North Port, Florida, in 2019. They departed from New York on July 2, 2021 for a four-month cross country trip in a 2012 Ford Transit Connect van converted to a camper. The couple documented their cross-country journey on Petito's YouTube account, "Nomadic Statik", as well as their Instagram accounts, with the last video being posted three weeks prior to her disappearance.
The disappearance gripped the US over the week of September 13-17, and then culminating in the weekend of the 18 and 19 of September. On September 19, Petito's remains were found in Wyoming's Bridger–Teton National Forest. An autopsy found that she was killed by manual strangulation. After a month of speculation around Laundrie's whereabouts, and an extended search of the area around his home, his skeletal remains were discovered in Florida's Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park on October 20. It was confirmed by an autopsy on November 23 that Laundrie had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, and the FBI later announced that he had admitted to killing Petito in his notebook, which was found near his remains.
