Rossellini's "Viva L'Italia" is a commissioned film about Giuseppe Garibaldi, the symbol of Italian unity, and his troops. In this case too, the director was faithful to all the traditions of neorealism that he himself decisively defined: Rossellini's film does not offer an unambiguous message or a narrow perspective on historical events, but rather paints a broad picture of the main character and the phenomena surrounding him, leaving it up to the viewers to draw conclusions and consider moral perspectives. One viewing may not be enough to notice all the fine details, as the excitement of the battles and the speeches of the charismatic main character capture much of the viewer's attention. If viewers aren't careful, they too may find themselves humming a familiar, inspiring tune: "Brothers of Italy, Italy has risen, bound Scipio's helmet..."
