The line-up of the band has changed several times: David Hodges leaving in 2002, co-founder Moody left in 2003 (mid-tour), bassist Will Boyd in 2006, followed by guitarist John LeCompt and drummer Rocky Gray in 2007. The last two changes led to a hiatus, with temporary band members contributing to tour performances. In June 2009, it was announced on the Evanescence website that the band was working on new material for a third studio album. Billboard ranked Evanescence #71 on the Best Artists of the Decade chart.
Fallen is the debut studio album by American rock band Evanescence. It was released on March 4, 2003 through Wind-Up Records. The album was recorded in multiple recording studios, including Conway Recording Studios in Hollywood, California from 2002 to 2003. Fallen is the band's most successful album, selling more than 7 million copies in the United States, and over 15 million worldwide. It peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200, spending more than 104 weeks within the chart. According to Billboard, it is the nineteenth best selling album of the '2000s. Internationally, it peaked at number one in multiple countries, including Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It was certified seven times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and acquired multiple certifications across the world.
Upon its release, Fallen has received mixed to positive reviews from critics. It has spawned four singles: "Bring Me to Life", "Going Under", "My Immortal", and "Everybody's Fool", with two of them charting within the top ten of more than ten countries worldwide. The first three got certification in at least one country. The album also earned the band five nominations at the 46th Grammy Awards: Album of the Year, Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song, Best Hard Rock Performance and Grammy Award for Best New Artist, winning Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance.
The Open Door is the second studio album by the American rock band Evanescence. It was first released in Poland on September 25, 2006, through Wind-up Records and subsequently in more than 20 other countries worldwide. It peaked at number one in four countries and in top five in over fifteen countries. The album was certified platinum in the United States just over a month after its release, and has since sold more than six million copies worldwide
To date, it has spawned five singles of which four were international singles and one was a promotional single. They all charted on international charts except "Good Enough" and "Weight of The World". This album earned a nomination at 50th Grammy Awards; Best Hard Rock Performance with "Sweet Sacrifice". The band also won in the "Album of the Year" category at the 2007 MTV Australia Video Music Awards. The album was well received by music critics who praised its lyrical content. The Open Door had been supported by two worldwide tours.
The first single from the album was "Call Me When You're Sober", which had a limited radio release on July 31, 2006, going into wide release over the next week. This full version of "Call Me When You're Sober" had been leaked to the Internet a couple of days before it was due to be officially released to radio airplay; after this occurred, the record label allowed radio stations to begin playing the song. Its music video, directed by Marc Webb, was filmed in July 2006.
The second single from The Open Door, "Lithium", written by Amy Lee, was released to the UK on January 8, 2007. Its official music video directed by Paul Fedor, was filmed between October 31 and November 1, 2006. The video exclusively premiered on the band's official website on November 27.
The third single, "Sweet Sacrifice", was originally planned to be "All That I'm Living For"; however, after considering the wishes of both the fans and the band itself, the label decided to change the release, and "Sweet Sacrifice" was released as a single from the album. Its accompaying music video was directed by P.R. Brown in Burbank, California between March 9 and March 10, 2007.
The fourth single is "Good Enough". The music video for "Good Enough" was filmed between June 11 and June 14, 2007, on Váci Street in Budapest, Hungary. The video was directed by Marc Webb and Rich Lee, and produced by production company DNA. As present in Fallen, this album contains both string and vocal ensembles. The Millennium Choir, the choir group used for songs on Fallen such as "Everybody's Fool", "Haunted" and "Whisper", is used on the tracks "Lacrymosa" and "Your Star".
The fifth single, "Weight of the World", was a limited release beginning October 2007 to the country of Colombia only. This is similar to the Fallen single "Imaginary", which was released only to Spain. Lee said that "Weight of the World" is a response to the pressure she feels when fans ask for answers to questions regarding their personal experiences.
Evanescence is the self-titled third studio album by American rock band Evanescence. The album is scheduled for release on October 11, 2011, through Wind-up Records.
The band started the writing process for the album on June 2009. The release of the album was changed several times. First, on February 22, 2010 the band entered in the studio with producer Steve Lillywhite but later they stopped recording the album with him because "it wasn't coming out nicely." During that time the album was scheduled for an August or September 2010 release, but Lee later announced that Evanescence had left the studio. On April 11, 2011, the band went back into the studio with a new producer, Nick Raskulinecz, and tracking was completed on July 8, 2011. The first single from the album, "What You Want", was released on August 9, 2011.
First, during the Steve Lillywhite sessions the album was scheduled for a release in August or September, 2010. Later, during the sessions with Nick Raskulinecz, that date was pushed to October 4, 2011, which was later pushed back to October 11 by Wind-up. However in Germany, the album is going to be released on October 7.
Snippets of the songs "What You Want", "The Other Side" and "Lost in Paradise" were shown on MTV News on July 11, 13, and 15, respectively. On August 8, Evanescence appeared on MTV to premiere their first single "What You Want" with a live performance and later an extended interview. The entire event was called "MTV First: Evanescence". The band also said that a goal of theirs was to have the song "My Heart Is Broken" placed on the soundtrack to the movie The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Lee went to Toronto's Liberty Studios on August 22, to preview 5 mastered songs from the new album to a selected crowd of thirty people. She previewed "What You Want", "The Change", "The Other Side", "My Heart Is Broken" and "Lost in Paradise".
The song "What You Want" was described as Evanescence's most different and heaviest song with heavy guitar melodies and freedom theme. It opens with drums in which Lee sings "Do what you, what you want / If you have a dream for better / Do what you, what you want / 'Til you don't want it anymore" and soon moves into a danceable guitar-driven mode, accompanied by synthesizers. Lyrically, the song is filled with the angst of a relationship that just can't quite work out despite the presence of love binding the pair together. "The Other Side" features a mix of double-bass drums, churning, chunky guitars and Lee's "ethereal, widescreen" vocals. The main theme of the song is death and Lee described it as a "band" song with rock and R&B elements. The ballad "Lost in Paradise" was compared to the song "Jóga" (1997) by the Icelandic recording artist Björk. Lee said that the song was inspired by her love for Evanescence. Starting with piano and Lee's vocals, the song slowly builds, layering on stirring strings, booming timpani and, at the climax, some thunderous guitar chords.
Another song "Oceans", "starts with a big, low synth and a vocal, then the band kicks in", says Lee. "It's big and lush. We've been having a lot of fun playing that one especially." Another ballad, originally called "Orange", but later renamed to "Never Go Back" talked about "loss from the perspective of someone losing someone in a tragedy". Lee later revealed that the song was inspired by the tsunami that happened in Japan in 2011. "The Change" begins with a gentle vibe that grows more insistent. "My Heart Is Broken" is a ballad that starts with piano and Lee's vocals.
