Born in Rome, Morricone's music includes over 100 classical pieces composed since 1946. In the 1950s he served as a studio arranger for RCA. During his career he produced over 500 songs for artists such as Paul Anka, Mina, Mireille Mathieu, Zucchero and Laura Pausini. However, he gained worldwide fame by composing the music (during the period 1960–75) for Italian westerns by directors such as Sergio Leone, Duccio Tessari, Sergio Sollima, and Sergio Corbucci, including the Dollars Trilogy, starring Clint Eastwood, the Ringo duology, The Big Gundown, Navajo Joe, Face to Face, Death Rides a Horse, The Great Silence, The Mercenary, Compañeros, Duck, You Sucker! and My Name is Nobody. Morricone achieved chart success with compositions like the theme of The Good, the Bad & the Ugly, Man with a Harmonica, Here's to You, Nella Fantasia and Chi Mai. Morricone also wrote the official theme for the 1978 FIFA World Cup. The Ecstasy of Gold is used by the heavy metal band Metallica as the opening theme for its concerts since 1983.

During 1966-1980, he functioned as a main member of Il Gruppo, one of the first experimental composers collectives. From the 1970s, Morricone excelled in Hollywood, composing for prolific directors such as Don Siegel, John Carpenter, Brian De Palma, Barry Levinson, Mike Nichols and Oliver Stone. Noteworthy scores include Frantic, Hamlet, In the Line of Fire, Wolf, Bulworth and Ripley's Game.

Morricone was associated with the Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore and has composed music for his films since Cinema Paradiso, Malèna, The Best Offer and The Correspondence. He continued to compose music for European productions, such as Fateless, Karol and En mai, fais ce qu'il te plait. His music has been reused in television series such as The Simpsons and The Sopranos, and in many films, including several by Quentin Tarantino (such as Kill Bill & Inglourious Basterds), The Expendables 2 and American Sniper. Tarantino's The Hateful Eight (2016) featured an original score by Morricone.

Ennio Morricone has sold over 70 million records worldwide. In 2007, he received the Academy Honorary Award "for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music." He has been nominated for a further 5 Oscars.
