Edward Lewis Wallant was an American novelist best known for writing the 1961 novel "The Pawnbroker", which was adapted into the 1964 Oscar-nominated film of the same name, directed by Sidney Lumet and starring Rod Steiger. He also worked in the 1950s as an art director at the advertising firm McCann Erickson. Wallant also served as a gunner's mate in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
