Director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett (A Horrible Way to Die) re-team to throw an extremely uncomfortable family reunion at the handsome but isolated Davison home. Once the siblings and their mates have assembled to celebrate their parents' wedding anniversary, the arrows and hatchets begin flying with alarming speed. The film's most exhilarating stroke is to make the archetypal "Last Girl" a ferociously skilled counterattacker; as played by Aussie actress Sharni Vinson (Step Up 3), this stubborn survivor needs no learning curve in the business of repelling and demolishing masked home invaders. Unlike so many horror efforts, this one actually gets stronger (and zanier) as it goes along, even if the twists are not especially twisty. The cast has the indie-film stamp of approval, and includes Joe Swanberg, AJ Bowen, Ti West, and Amy Seimetz; that's scream queen Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator) as the matriarch of this messed-up family. This is very much an audience movie--even certain music cues are meant to trigger waves of laughter--so try to see it with a group of like-minded horror fans. --Robert Horton
