Hakuoro, the hero of Utawarerumono (2006), is a cipher to himself, the other characters, and the audience. He was found unconscious and wounded by Eluluu, the granddaughter of a village wisewoman. As he regains his strength, Hakuoro demonstrates a nobility of character as he aids the villagers. But he can remember nothing of his past, not even why he wears a mask that conceals the upper half of his face. The oppressive actions of the local lord forces the villagers into open revolt, with Hakuoro leading them. Utawarerumono offers more effective storytelling than many series with bigger budgets and higher profiles. Director
