This eagerly awaited fantasy-adventure series (2004) is adapted from the popular Korean MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) Ragnarok. Unfortunately, the filmmakers have taken little more than the place names and some of the monsters from the game. Aspiring swordsman Roan has sworn to defend his childhood friend, acolyte Yufa, as they wander through the realms of Midgard. They're joined by blindfolded sorceress Takius; ultra-cute merchant Maya; and taciturn, heroic assassin Iruga and his chatterbox companion, hunter Judia. A trio of inept thugs provide Team Rocket-style comic villainy. Although these mismatched characters cover a lot of ground together, they don't get anywhere. They gradually develop a grudging mutual respect, but no one grows or learns anything from their experiences; nor are they particularly likeable. Roan remains a well-intentioned doormat for Yufa, Maya wails and fusses about sales, and Judia natters in a heavy Texas accent (to approximate "the Osaka dialect"). Takius' portentous utterances about monsters becoming more violent and Midgard being threatened by earthquakes and tsunamis sound like they're borrowed from the more entertaining .hack// continuity. The goblins and orcs look like the figures in the game, but the human characters don't. Ultimately, Ragnarok the Animation feels more like a group of stock anime characters staging a cosplay pageant than an adaptation of the original Ragnarok.
