The Brian Law Opera Scholarship was established in 1991 to recognize and honour the contribution made by Brian Law to opera in the National Capital Region and beyond. It is managed by a sub-committee of the Board of Directors of the National Capital Opera Society, Ottawa. The first competition was held in 1993. Subsequent competitions have been held every second year since 1993. The scholarship is designed for students aged 22 to 32 who are focusing on an opera career and who are either natives or residents of, or have studied singing in, the National Capital Region.

Some six months before the final juried recital, notices and application forms for the competition are sent out to most musical educational organizations across Canada, as well as to former competitors..
By the end of September, applicants must submit a package consisting of the Application Form, a CD of three operatic arias (one with recitative), a musical CV, a 200-word statement giving the applicant’s aspirations and goals in the field of opera, and a $20 non-refundable administration fee. Next, a preliminary jury is convened. For the 2007 competition, the members of the preliminary jury were Barbara Clark, Garth Hampson, and Charlotte Stewart. From all the entries, up to six finalists could be chosen (both male and female if possible), and then notified early in October
On October 4, 2007, the preliminary jury chose the following six candidates for the 2007 competition recital: Jonathan Estabrooks, Sharleen Joynt, Yannick-Muriel Noah, Kathleen Promane, Maghan Stewart and Jillian Yemen.
The competition recital took place on the evening of November 24, 2007 at the First Unitarian Congregation. The first place winner was Yannick-Muriel Noah, second went to Sharleen Joynt and third was Maghan Stewart.
